Draft Mode does not grant WordPress access by itself: a secure preview route must validate the request, resolve the requested content, enable Draft Mode, and redirect to that content’s frontend path.
How the preview flow works
WordPress remains the content source; Next.js controls how the frontend renders a request. The editor’s preview link reaches a Next.js route handler, which validates a secret and content identifier, confirms that the content exists, enables Draft Mode, and redirects to a path resolved from the WordPress lookup. On that page, Next.js checks whether Draft Mode is enabled and chooses the draft data request instead of the public, published-data request.
That separation matters: the Next.js preview cookie tells the application to take its preview path, but it is not WordPress API authentication and does not reveal draft records. The server-side data client still needs authorization to read the intended content. Next.js describes Draft Mode as a way to preview headless-CMS drafts, including content for pages that would otherwise be statically generated. See the App Router Draft Mode guide.
Set up Draft Mode for the router your project uses
First identify whether the application uses the App Router (app/) or Pages Router (pages/) and whether it gets WordPress content through the REST API or WPGraphQL. The exact code and authentication depend on those choices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
App Router
- Create a Route Handler, for example
app/api/draft/route.ts, as the entry point for the WordPress preview link. - Have the link send a server-side secret and a content identifier, commonly a slug, to the deployed Next.js site. The exact WordPress setting or plugin action that creates this URL depends on the site’s editorial configuration; the Next.js guide assumes the CMS can set a custom draft URL or that the URL is constructed manually.
- In the handler, reject a missing or incorrect secret and a missing identifier. Query WordPress to verify that the requested post or page exists before enabling preview.
- Resolve the frontend route from the verified WordPress record. Do not redirect to an arbitrary destination supplied in the request; Next.js warns that doing so can create an open redirect.
- Call
draftMode().enable()fromnext/headers, then redirect to the resolved content path. - On the content page, check
draftMode().isEnabledand use the authenticated WordPress draft query only when it is true. Use the published-data request otherwise.
Follow the current App Router guide for the Route Handler API and update your WordPress client to match the actual API and permissions configured on your site. The guide’s sample data endpoints are illustrative, not WordPress endpoints to copy verbatim.
Pages Router
Pages Router projects also have current Draft Mode guidance. Use that guidance for the project’s router rather than transplanting an App Router Route Handler unchanged.

Older examples using setPreviewData and context.preview belong to the legacy Preview Mode API. Next.js says Preview Mode has been superseded by Draft Mode; its legacy guide remains available, including a WordPress example, but is not the preferred starting point for a new implementation. See Next.js’s legacy Preview Mode guide.
Choose how Next.js reads WordPress drafts
Use the API your site already maintains and ensure its authentication can read the records you intend to preview. The official documentation supports both WordPress REST API and WPGraphQL approaches, but does not establish one as universally better.

| Data layer | Draft access and considerations |
|---|---|
| WordPress REST API | The posts endpoint is GET /wp/v2/posts. WordPress documents statuses including draft and an authenticated edit context for fields. Private content requires authentication or explicit exposure; access also depends on the site’s roles, post types, plugins, and policies. See the Posts REST API reference and REST API reference. |
| WPGraphQL | Preview requests require authentication recognized by WordPress and a user able to edit the post. A common headless pattern is for the frontend server to authenticate to WordPress while independently restricting who can enter preview mode. See WPGraphQL’s preview documentation. |
For REST API requests over HTTPS, WordPress Application Passwords are one core authentication option; WordPress says they have shipped since version 5.6. Keep credentials in server-side environment configuration, use an appropriately limited account, and follow the site’s role and access rules. The documentation describes the mechanism, but exact required permissions depend on the site. See WordPress REST API authentication.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect the preview route and verify both data paths
- Keep the preview secret on the server and in the CMS configuration; do not put it in client-side code.
- Reject requests with a missing or incorrect secret, a missing identifier, or a content identifier that does not resolve to an allowed WordPress record.
- Build the redirect path from the verified record, not from an untrusted redirect parameter or unchecked slug.
- Fetch draft data in server-side code using the authorization required by REST or WPGraphQL. Never expose WordPress application credentials to browser code.
- Keep the privileged draft request separate from the normal published-data path. Verify that ordinary visitors still receive published content when Draft Mode is off.
Test the editor’s actual preview link end to end: confirm it opens the intended draft, invalid or missing identifiers fail safely, and the redirect remains on the intended site. Also test how editors leave preview. For Pages Router, the Draft Mode guide documents disabling the mode; for App Router, use the current API reference and route pattern if the editorial workflow needs an explicit exit. The documentation says the browser session otherwise ends when the cookie expires or the browser closes. Custom post types, fields, membership rules, multilingual routes, and preview-link behavior are site-specific and need to be checked in the WordPress integration.
