Compare the methods and timing behind New Zealand polls before comparing their headline percentages. A poll is an estimate from a particular sample at a particular time—not a verdict on public opinion or a prediction of the election result. Check who was surveyed, when and how they were surveyed, what they were asked, and how uncertainty and undecided responses were handled.

Use the same checklist for each poll

Record the details side by side before deciding whether two results can be compared. The New Zealand Population Review guide recommends checking these disclosures because sample design, question wording and the reported base can affect what a headline percentage means.

What to check What to record Why it matters
Fieldwork Start and end dates, plus the release date Fieldwork dates show when responses were collected. A publication date alone does not tell you which period of opinion the poll reflects.
Population and denominator Target population, sample size, and whether results are for all respondents, decided voters, likely voters or another base Percentages based on different groups or denominators may not be directly comparable.
Commissioner and pollster The organisation that commissioned the poll and the company that conducted it These are distinct roles and should not be conflated when identifying a poll.
Collection and response Sampling method, survey mode if disclosed, weighting adjustments, nonresponse information, and undecided or undeclared share A large sample does not by itself remove problems caused by how people were selected or who did not respond.
Question Exact wording and, where available, question order Different prompts can elicit different answers. Compare results most confidently when questions and reported bases are reasonably alike.
Uncertainty The stated margin of error and the basis on which it is calculated This helps indicate sampling variation, but it is not a measure of every possible survey error.
Seat projection Threshold, electorate-seat, overhang and seat-allocation assumptions; any coalition assumptions Projected seats require rules and modelling beyond the party-vote percentages reported by a poll.

The New Zealand Population Review guide lists target population and sample size, commissioner and polling company, sampling, margin of error, weighting, question wording, undecided share and fieldwork timing among the details readers should look for. Read the guide.

Interpret sample size and margin of error carefully

A bigger sample is not automatically a better poll

A larger sample can reduce random variation, but sample count is only one part of poll quality. Sampling design, weighting and response or nonresponse bias can matter more; a well-designed smaller poll may be more informative than a poorly designed larger one. A 2023 guide published in the 2024 issue of New Zealand Population Review reports that Research Association New Zealand recommended at least 500 respondents for nationwide political polls. It describes 500–1,000 as a typical range for nationwide polls, not a universal minimum or a guarantee of accuracy.

A margin of error is not a complete error bar

A stated margin of error helps readers assess the random variation expected from sampling under the poll’s stated assumptions. It does not account for every source of error, such as differences in who responds, how the sample was recruited, or how questions are asked. Read it alongside the poll’s method and population disclosures rather than treating it as a blanket assurance.

In a 20 April 2021 decision, Broadcasting Standards Authority chair Judge Bill Hastings wrote, “Ideally, polls would be reported with the margin of error as it assists viewers to interpret the value of the poll itself.” The same decision observed that viewers understand polls as rough tools rather than definitive results. Read the BSA decision.

Judge apparent movement across polls

A change in headline percentages can reflect a real change in opinion, but it can also reflect sampling variation, different fieldwork windows, wording, sample design, weighting or nonresponse. Compare the checklist details first. If reported uncertainty intervals overlap, that alone does not prove the results are unchanged; if they do not overlap, that alone does not establish that opinion shifted. The point-estimate difference by itself is not enough to declare a real change.

Use fieldwork dates to understand whether two polls describe overlapping or distinct periods. The BSA’s 2 September 2024 decision describes public understanding of poll results as sample-based, time-specific and rough—not definitive. Read the BSA decision.

Read a poll average as a model, not a raw poll

An average can help show a broader pattern, but it depends on which polls are included and how they are weighted. Check the publisher’s method note for its selection window, treatment of missing party figures, recency and sample-size weights, and effects it does not model. Different averaging choices can produce different summaries; there is no basis here to treat one publisher’s method as a universal standard.

For example, NZ Polls’ Average v1.0 methodology, published 1 September 2026, uses the six most recent eligible nationwide party-vote polls. It weights for recency and sample size, with each earlier observation receiving 82% of the previous observation’s recency weight; its sample-size weight is the square root of reported sample divided by 1,000. The methodology says unavailable party values are preserved rather than set to zero. It does not model pollster house effects, mode effects, correlated errors, electorate-level swings or Monte Carlo win probabilities. These are the stated choices and omissions of this version, not general polling rules or proof that the model has been independently validated. Read NZ Polls’ methodology.

Official averages also need their series and date ranges attached. The Electoral Commission’s 2026 Broadcasting Allocation Decision lists 1News-Verian averages for February 2024–April 2026, Roy Morgan averages for December 2023–March 2026, and RNZ-Reid Research averages for March 2025–March 2026. Because those spans differ, the figures are historical summaries, not a like-for-like present-day poll-of-polls. Read the Electoral Commission decision.

Separate party-vote results from MMP seat estimates

A party-vote poll reports support, not seats. Translating percentages into seats requires applying MMP rules and assumptions, including the 5% threshold or an electorate-seat qualification, and a seat-allocation method. An estimate may also account for an overhang if a party wins electorate seats beyond its proportional entitlement. A coalition calculator may add estimated party seats, but that arithmetic does not predict coalition negotiations, confidence agreements or political compatibility.

NZ Polls’ methodology describes a mechanical estimate using modified Sainte-Laguë allocation and a qualification assumption based on reaching 5% or winning an electorate seat; it also explains how an electorate seat beyond proportional entitlement can expand Parliament. Treat such a projection as conditional arithmetic, not as a result directly observed by the poll. Research Association New Zealand’s political polling guide also discusses the relationship between polling and parliamentary representation in the New Zealand MMP context. See the seat-estimate assumptions and read the RANZ guide.

A practical habit before sharing a poll result

  1. Find the original poll release or method note rather than relying only on a headline or chart.
  2. Check fieldwork dates, population, denominator, question wording and response handling.
  3. Read the stated margin of error as sampling uncertainty, not total survey uncertainty.
  4. When comparing results, look for comparable methods and time periods; do not infer a definitive shift from headline differences alone.
  5. If the story gives an average or seat projection, inspect its included polls and assumptions before repeating the result.
