Gem Security announced a $23 million Series A funding round on September 27, 2023, led by GGV Capital. The company said the round brought its total funding to $34 million. Gem sells cloud detection and response (CDR) software designed to help security teams detect, investigate, and contain cloud-native threats.
Who invested in Gem Security’s Series A?
GGV Capital led the round. IBM Ventures, Silicon Valley CISO Investments (SVCI), angel investors, and existing seed investor Team8 also participated, according to Gem’s September 27, 2023 announcement. The company described the round as oversubscribed; that characterization came from Gem.
Contemporaneous TechCrunch coverage reported that Gem had raised an $11 million seed round led by Team8 in February 2023. The company said its cumulative funding reached $34 million after the Series A.
What does Gem Security’s product do?
Gem described its offering as a purpose-built Cloud Detection and Response platform for detecting, investigating, and containing cloud-native threats. Its September 2023 announcement listed support for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Kubernetes, along with integrations for security operations tools such as SIEM/SOAR and CSPM, identity providers, ticketing systems, source-code repositories, and secrets managers.
#1 Best Overall
The company said its aims included giving security teams multi-cloud visibility and cloud-native forensics while reducing the time needed to respond to threats. These are product descriptions from Gem’s announcement, not independently tested performance claims.
Why did Gem raise the money?
Gem said the financing would accelerate momentum for its CDR platform. In a TechCrunch interview published the day of the announcement, co-founder and CEO Arie Zilberstein said the timing reflected both market opportunity and the company’s desire to grow faster. The coverage did not provide a detailed allocation of the proceeds.

What did Gem report about its customers and market?
TechCrunch reported in September 2023 that Gem had been founded in 2022, launched its service early in 2023, and signed dozens of enterprise customers by the time of the funding announcement. The article named Repsol, OpenWeb, Thirty Madison, Kaltura, and Allan Gray as examples. These are announcement-era reports, not a current customer list or an audited measure of traction.
Gem’s release attributed two market figures to Google Cloud’s 2023 State of Cloud Threat Detection and Response Report:
- Organizations had, on average, 65% of their infrastructure in the cloud.
- 72% of organizations leveraged multiple clouds.
Those statistics are presented as attributed in Gem’s release; the underlying Google Cloud report was not independently reviewed here. Zilberstein said, “The cloud changes everything for security operations and incident response teams.” GGV Capital Managing Partner Oren Yunger said, “With the shift to the cloud, the security operations model needs to evolve.”
