IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 adds three AI features: native GitHub Copilot integration, support for agent skills, and AI code completion through third-party providers. JetBrains also highlights Java 27 support, Kotlin 2.4 stable features, and updates to Spring, Gradle, debugging, and other development workflows. The release is broader than an AI update, and several frequently mentioned agent features belong to the earlier 2026.1 release.

What AI features are new in IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2?

JetBrains’ IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 announcement names three AI additions:

  • Native GitHub Copilot integration: Copilot can be used through an integration built into the IDE.
  • Agent skills: the release adds support for skills that can extend agent workflows.
  • Third-party-provider AI completion: AI code completion can use providers beyond JetBrains’ own AI offering.

The announcement establishes that these capabilities are included in the release; it does not establish comparative code quality, productivity gains, or performance against other tools. Setup and access requirements may differ by feature and provider.

What else changed in the 2026.2 release?

JetBrains presents 2026.2 as a conventional IDE release as well as an AI update. Its announcement highlights these language, framework, and workflow changes:

  • Language support: day-one support for Java 27, stable features from Kotlin 2.4, and TypeScript 7.0.
  • Framework and build tools: Spring improvements, Gradle 10 support, and migration assistance.
  • Debugging and development workflow: logpoints, dependency completion, changes to Git conflict resolution, and Docker Compose improvements.

For details on the scope of each change, see JetBrains’ release announcement.

Which agent features are from IntelliJ IDEA 2026.1?

Some broader agent capabilities highlighted across JetBrains’ IDE materials were introduced in the 2026.1 feature set, not 2026.2. JetBrains’ IntelliJ IDEA 2026.1 notes list built-in support for more agents, including Codex and agents compatible with the Agent Client Protocol (ACP), along with an ACP Registry for discovering agents.

The 2026.1 materials also describe next edit suggestions, Git worktrees, and native database access for Codex and Claude Agent. Next edit suggestions are described as quota-free for Java, Kotlin, and Scala subscribers; that qualification should not be generalized to other languages or users.

JetBrains’ rolling AI features page lists capabilities with version labels, including Codex integration, ACP Registry, Bring Your Own Key, Junie in AI chat, and next edit suggestions. Check the feature’s own version and access conditions rather than assuming every item is new in 2026.2 or available under the same subscription or key setup.

Does AI Assistant work across JetBrains IDEs?

JetBrains says AI Assistant is compatible with IntelliJ IDEA and almost all other JetBrains IDEs. That broad compatibility statement does not mean every individual feature works identically in every IDE. For capability-specific compatibility and requirements, consult JetBrains’ AI Assistant documentation.

How can you get IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2?

JetBrains says the release can be downloaded from its website or installed by updating through the IDE, Toolbox App, or Ubuntu snap packages. Availability and update timing can depend on the distribution route.

What do the release figures tell us?

JetBrains’ 2026.2 fixes announcement reports more than 1,300 bug fixes and usability improvements, including 140 freezes and other performance issues addressed. These are release-maintenance figures, not measurements of AI quality, developer productivity, or code correctness. The reviewed JetBrains release and feature materials do not provide an independent benchmark establishing those outcomes.
