Usually, yes: if you buy a game after it leaves Xbox Game Pass, you can generally continue from your existing save. Leaving the catalog changes whether you can access the game through your subscription; it does not, by itself, delete your saved progress. Sign in with the same Xbox profile and connect to Xbox network so the save can synchronize. Compatibility can vary if you switch platforms or editions.
Does a Game Pass game leaving the catalog erase your save?
No. Game access and saved progress are separate. Game Pass determines whether your subscription lets you launch a catalog title; save data records your progress and, for supported games, can synchronize between your console and cloud storage. Xbox’s Manage your game saves guidance describes data stored on the console and in the cloud and synchronized through Xbox network.
Microsoft’s Game Pass page says access to catalog games lasts until the subscription expires or is cancelled, or the game leaves the catalog. Buying the game is one way to regain access after that entitlement ends. Catalog availability can vary by market and plan, so check the current local listing for a specific title: Xbox Game Pass.
How to resume after buying the game
- Use the same Xbox profile. Sign in with the profile you used while playing through Game Pass; that is the profile associated with the progress you want to retrieve.
- Connect to Xbox network. Give the console time to synchronize before launching the game or moving to another device. Xbox warns that offline play can leave cloud data out of sync.
- Install or launch the version you purchased. Once the game is available through your purchase, start it while signed in and online so it can use the supported save data.
- Handle a sync conflict carefully. If asked to choose between local and cloud data, do not select an option at random. First determine which copy reflects your latest progress; choosing the older copy could replace the newer one.
Will the save transfer to another Xbox, PC, or edition?
Do not assume every release shares saves. Microsoft’s XR-052 GDK certification requirements, version 2.0 dated 2025-11-01, require save roaming for covered games that use the same TitleID across Xbox platforms, devices, or console generations when the user is signed in to Xbox network. Its examples include Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. That requirement applies to games meeting those conditions; it does not establish compatibility between every console and PC release or between separately identified editions. See Microsoft’s XR-052 documentation.

If you buy a different platform release or a distinct edition, check that game’s official support information for save-transfer compatibility before expecting your progress to carry over.
