Azure AI Studio is now documented by Microsoft as Microsoft Foundry. It brings model access, prompt and agent development, evaluation, and deployment into a connected workflow—but you do not need to use every part of it. For a simple application, start with a single model call; add agents, tools, and operational controls only when your requirements call for them.
What Azure AI Studio is called now
Microsoft’s product naming has moved through Azure AI Studio and Azure AI Foundry to Microsoft Foundry. The current documentation describes Foundry as a unified environment for agents, models, and tools, with capabilities such as tracing, monitoring, evaluations, role-based access control, networking, and configurable policies. Microsoft characterizes it as a management grouping with built-in enterprise-readiness capabilities; that describes the platform’s features, not a guarantee that an application built on it is secure or reliable by default. Microsoft’s current overview was reported updated September 23, 2026.
The overview describes access to more than 10,000 models from Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and other providers. That is Microsoft’s catalog count at the time of the overview, not an independent assessment of model quality or a promise that every model is available in every region or through every access method.
Choose the development surface that fits the work
Foundry offers several ways to move from an idea to a working application. They can be combined: for example, explore a model and prototype a prompt in the portal, then move the implementation into code.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Surface | Useful for | Where the work happens |
|---|---|---|
| Foundry portal | Exploring models, trying prompts, creating prompt agents without code, and running quick evaluations | Browser |
| SDKs | Building an application in Python, C#, JavaScript, or Java with code-level control | Your development environment |
Azure Developer CLI (azd) |
Scaffolding, running, testing, and deploying hosted-agent projects | Command line |
| Visual Studio Code | Building and debugging agents in the editor with the Foundry extension | Visual Studio Code |
| Coding agents and MCP | Using coding agents with Foundry’s skill and MCP server | A compatible coding-agent workflow |
Choose the portal when quick exploration or a no-code prompt-agent prototype is the priority. Choose an SDK when the application needs to fit into a codebase or requires more direct control. The CLI is positioned for hosted-agent scaffolding and deployment tasks; VS Code is useful when you want agent development and debugging in the editor. Microsoft’s overview presents these as complementary surfaces, not mutually exclusive products.
Start small, then add orchestration if needed
A useful first build is often just a model request and a response. If your application does not need tools, knowledge retrieval, or multi-step orchestration, you can begin with a single model call instead of creating an agent. An agent becomes useful when the application needs a more structured way to use tools or perform a task through multiple steps.

- Make a first model call. Confirm that your project and chosen model can return a response for a representative prompt.
- Set up the developer environment. Pick the portal or a supported code workflow, such as an SDK, CLI, or VS Code, based on where you plan to build and test.
- Choose a model. Select one suited to the task and verify its availability and access requirements in your environment.
- Add an agent only if the task needs one. A declarative prompt agent can be built in the portal or with an SDK. A hosted agent runs your own code.
- Add tools or knowledge when the use case requires them. Keep the first version narrow enough that you can inspect its behavior.
- Evaluate, revise, and deploy. Use test data and explicit criteria to find failures before release, then keep checking quality as the application runs.
Microsoft’s development overview describes this progression from a first model call through environment setup, model choice, agents, tools, and deployment. It documents capabilities and recommended steps, but does not establish a quantified reduction in development time, cost, or errors.
Evaluate behavior before release and in production
Foundry evaluations can target a model, an agent, outputs from an existing dataset, or captured traces. They run against test data and score results using built-in or custom evaluators. Microsoft presents evaluation as useful both before deployment and for monitoring quality after deployment. See Run evaluations from the Microsoft Foundry portal for current portal steps and prerequisites.

For a practical evaluation cycle, prepare examples that resemble the requests your application will actually receive, define what acceptable answers look like, inspect failures, revise prompts or tools, and rerun the evaluation. An evaluation score is evidence about the test set and criteria you used; it cannot establish how the system will behave for every user or capture every real-world risk.
Depending on the evaluation, setup can require a Foundry project, an appropriate project role, an evaluation target, and an Azure OpenAI connection with a deployed judge model for AI-assisted quality evaluations. Check Microsoft’s live documentation for the applicable requirements and any preview labels before following a particular procedure.

Understand model access and deployment choices
Some supported instant-access preview models can be called without creating a deployment. Other models use deployment routes, including serverless API and managed compute. Eligibility and endpoint behavior differ by model, so verify the options for the specific model rather than assuming that deployment is always required—or never required.
| Access route | Deployment requirement | Infrastructure and capacity | Configuration and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supported instant-access preview model | No deployment for eligible models | Model-specific; consult the model’s current listing | Preview access without a deployment; do not assume all models qualify |
| Serverless API deployment | Deployment used to access the model | Route and requirements depend on the model | Check model eligibility and the applicable endpoint documentation |
| Managed compute deployment | Deployment required | Uses managed compute; capacity and configuration depend on the model and setup | Provides a configured deployment endpoint; check current model-specific requirements |
Microsoft describes deployments as named model-access configurations that may specify a model version, provisioning or capacity, content filtering, and rate limiting. Its deployment overview and endpoint documentation explain the routes and configurations. The available documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples performance or cost winner among them.

Plan for Prompt flow’s announced retirement
Microsoft’s Azure Machine Learning documentation states that Prompt flow—including its web authoring experience in Microsoft Foundry and Azure Machine Learning, VS Code extensions, and related container images—will no longer be supported or available after April 20, 2027. The same notice recommends moving dependent workloads to supported alternatives and names Microsoft Agent Framework as an example. See the Prompt flow development guidance and its migration information before planning changes to existing flows.
Prompt flow’s visual orchestration of language models, prompts, and Python tools—and its testing, debugging, iteration, and prompt-variant features—may explain why a team relies on it today. But the announced end-of-support date makes it a migration concern, not a durable default for new work.
What Foundry can and cannot simplify
Foundry groups model access, development surfaces, evaluation, and deployment into a connected workflow, so a developer can choose a small starting point and add capabilities as the application becomes more demanding. The sources describe available features and recommended development steps; they do not quantify time or money saved, prove one surface is faster, or establish that a particular model or workflow will produce better results. Treat the platform as a set of development and operational options, then validate the choices against your application’s requirements and test data.
