If you know Java, you can add Kotlin to a JVM project without replacing its Java code. The key adjustments are Kotlin’s concise class syntax and final-by-default inheritance, its explicit rules for Java interop and nullability, and coroutines: suspendable computations that can free a thread while waiting, rather than another name for threads or futures.
How do Kotlin classes differ from Java classes?
A Kotlin class declaration can put its constructor parameters directly in the class header, and creating an instance does not require Java’s new keyword.

val user = User("Mina", true)Here, val creates a read-only property and var a mutable property. When a class primarily holds data, consider a data class; Kotlin generates useful value-oriented methods such as equals, hashCode, toString, and copy. It is not a universal replacement for Java records or ordinary POJOs: choose based on the type’s purpose and the Java-facing compatibility you need. Inheritance is opt-in
Kotlin classes and their members are final by default. Mark a class open if it may be subclassed, and mark an overridable member open as well. A subclass uses : and must declare an override explicitly:

Can I use Kotlin in an existing Java project?
Yes. Kotlin is designed to work alongside Java on the JVM, so a project can introduce Kotlin gradually rather than require an all-at-once rewrite. Official setup guidance points to IntelliJ IDEA and Android Studio; IntelliJ IDEA also includes a Java-to-Kotlin converter that can help with initial translation. Calling Java from Kotlin
Kotlin can use Java classes, collections, and conventional getter/setter APIs. For example, a Java getName() method can usually be read in Kotlin as person.name. This property syntax is an interop convenience; it does not make the languages’ type systems identical.
Pay particular attention to nullability. Java references may or may not be null, and Kotlin represents many Java-originating types as platform types because the compiler cannot always establish nullability. Treat such values carefully at the boundary instead of assuming Kotlin has proved they are non-null. Java wildcards map to Kotlin type projections, while Java raw types map to star projections. Calling Kotlin from Java
A Kotlin property commonly appears to Java as a getter; a var commonly has a setter too. The exact JVM surface depends on the declaration and compiler, and a backing field may also be generated. Kotlin’s internal visibility is another boundary detail: such declarations are public at the JVM level and are often name-mangled by the compiler. Java callers therefore cannot infer the full JVM API just from Kotlin source visibility. Calling Kotlin from Java

How do coroutines work in Kotlin?
A coroutine is a suspendable computation. On the JVM it still runs on operating-system threads, but it can suspend without blocking the thread while it waits, then resume later. Depending on its dispatcher, it may resume on a different thread. A coroutine is therefore neither a renamed thread nor simply a Java future.
Start with suspend
The suspend modifier marks a function that may suspend and later resume. Such a function must be called from another suspending function or from a coroutine context; it does not, by itself, start concurrent work or choose a thread.

A scope establishes coroutine lifecycle ownership and hierarchy. A dispatcher determines the execution context. A coroutine’s context carries information that includes execution and lifecycle-related elements. Choose a dispatcher to suit the work and platform context rather than adding one mechanically to every call.
Kotlin’s standard library provides the low-level language foundation for suspending functions. Common builders and higher-level primitives such as launch, async, and withContext come from the kotlinx.coroutines library, not from Kotlin language keywords. Coroutine overview Coroutines basics
Structured concurrency ties child work to its owner
Structured concurrency organizes coroutines into parent-child relationships. A parent waits for its children; cancellation and failure propagate through the hierarchy. This makes ownership important: launch work in an appropriate scope so it does not outlive the operation or component responsible for it.
Use the builder that matches the result
launchstarts work when the caller does not need a returned value.asyncstarts work that produces a result represented by a deferred value; retrieve it withawait.withContextruns a block in a different context and returns its result, useful when a particular execution context is needed.
These examples rely on kotlinx.coroutines. They are not built-in replacements for Java concurrency types in every API: use the coroutine primitives that fit the lifecycle and calling conventions of your application.
