A convention may include tournaments, but a tournament can also be held on its own or online.
What’s the difference between a gaming convention and an esports tournament?
The key difference is what defines the event. A convention is defined by the range of experiences it offers attendees. A tournament is defined by organized competition and how results are decided.
| Aspect | Video game convention | Esports tournament |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Bring people together for games, gaming culture, and community. | Determine competitive results in a specific game. |
| Program | May combine exhibits, demos, panels, vendors, guests, cosplay, casual play, and tournaments. | Centers on matches and activities that support the competition. |
| Participation | Attendees can take part in different activities, depending on access and event rules. | Players or teams enter through a defined registration or selection process; others may watch if the event allows spectators. |
| Rules and outcomes | Rules vary by activity; tournament rules apply to the competitive portion. | Rules and a tournament format determine match outcomes and standings. |
| Location | Usually presented as a gathering at a venue, with details set by the organizer. | Can be in person or online. |
Gen Con’s official corporate fact sheet describes a gaming-culture event with exhibits, appearances, games, workshops, seminars, art shows, and tournaments. By contrast, the 2022 guide from ESA, ISFE, ESA-C, and IGEA describes esports competitions as organized for a specific game, with a concrete format, rules, and a system for selecting or registering players and teams.
Can a video game convention have esports tournaments?
Yes. The categories overlap: a convention can include a tournament as one part of a broader program. GameACon’s 2026 rules and guidelines describe a convention with a vendor hall, artist alley, demos, panels, Q&A, cosplay, and live tournaments. The tournament remains a competition with its own entry and rules; it does not define everything else happening at the convention.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The reverse can happen, too: a competition-centered event can offer activities beyond matches. Evo describes its 2026 event as a three-day celebration of competitive fighting games and provides information about schedules, side activities, vendors, and its venue. That mix does not make every activity a tournament.
Are esports tournaments always held in person?
No. The 2022 esports guide includes both in-person and online competition. A convention is a gathering with a wider program, while a tournament describes the competitive structure; the words alone do not tell you whether a particular tournament is online, held at a convention, or staged separately.

How to tell what you can do at a specific event
Event labels do not guarantee access to every activity. Check the organizer’s current schedule and rules for:
- Which activities are included with general admission and which require separate tickets.
- Whether tournament registration is open, and any eligibility, age, or team requirements.
- The game lineup, tournament format, match rules, and whether spectators can attend.
- Venue, dates, and whether competition takes place online, in person, or in both formats.
For example, GameACon’s 2026 guidance distinguishes public areas from ticketed activities and says tournament entry and rules are handled per tournament. Those are details of that event, not universal convention rules.

Why tournament organizers need to check game-use permissions
Classifying an event as a convention or tournament does not settle whether organizers may use a particular game. WIPO’s 2026 guidelines for esports tournament organizers identify factors such as dates, territory, commercial character, prize pool and format, participants, fees, sponsorship, merchandising, and broadcast. Authorization can depend on those characteristics.
Publisher policies are specific to that publisher and game. For example, Nintendo’s community tournament guidelines, published in 2023 and effective November 15, 2023, limit the listed community tournament permissions to small-scale, not-for-profit events that meet the stated conditions. That policy should not be assumed to apply to other publishers.
