Keep low-voltage cable out of the same holes as AC wiring. Because fire-rated walls, air-handling spaces, structural members and local rules can change what is allowed, confirm the route before drilling.
Plan the route before opening the wall
Choose the locations for your network equipment and wall outlet, then sketch the path between them. An interior-wall route may be practical, but inspect the actual construction rather than assuming a cavity is clear. Account for framing, insulation, fire blocking, heat sources and existing services. Leviton recommends avoiding heat sources and preferring inner-wall paths where possible; it advises that exterior cable runs be installed in conduit. Its guidance is general residential installation advice, not permission to drill through a particular wall or structural member. Leviton Basic Residential Installer Guide.
Identify fire-rated assemblies and any space used for air handling before choosing a route or cable. Leviton advises against placing its structured media enclosure in a fire-rated wall. If the wall’s rating or construction is uncertain, ask the local authority having jurisdiction or a qualified installer how the route must be handled.
Choose cable for the space
Use Ethernet cable whose category, construction and jacket rating fit the intended route. A cable being inside a wall does not, by itself, mean that plenum-rated cable is required. The required rating depends on the space and applicable local rules, so verify it before buying bulk cable.

As one product example, Leviton’s BERK-TEK LANMARK-6 Cat 6 U/UTP CMP product page identifies a CMP flame rating and use in air-handling ducts and plenums in accordance with applicable code. The page lists a 1,000-foot box for the referenced model. Those details describe that product, not a universal requirement or recommendation for ordinary wall cavities. Leviton BERK-TEK LANMARK-6 Cat 6 U/UTP CMP.
When comparing cable, check its category and performance, jacket rating, conductor and construction details, package length and suitability for the exact installation. Do not choose CMP just because a run passes inside a wall.

Keep Ethernet clear of mains wiring
Locate existing wiring and other services before drilling. Leviton’s guide says not to run low-voltage cable through the same drilled holes as AC wiring. It recommends using a separate stud space where possible. If a parallel route cannot otherwise be avoided, the guide recommends at least 12 inches of separation; where cables must cross, it recommends crossing at 90 degrees. These are the guide’s recommendations, not a substitute for local electrical or building requirements. Leviton Basic Residential Installer Guide.
If you cannot establish where existing wiring runs, stop rather than drilling on a guess. A qualified electrician or low-voltage installer can help identify a safer route.

Drill and protect framing penetrations
Once the path is clear and permitted, make independent penetrations for the low-voltage cable rather than sharing holes with AC wiring. Leviton’s general guide recommends 1-inch holes positioned 1¼ inches from the edge of framing members. It also recommends nail plates where needed to protect cable from nails or screws. These figures do not establish that a particular member may be drilled: framing type, structural limits, fire protection and local requirements still govern.
Use care when feeding cable through a penetration. Leviton cautions that low-voltage wiring is less damage-resistant than Romex® and should be handled carefully. Avoid sharp edges and do not force the cable past an obstruction.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Pull gently, support the run and label both ends
Pull steadily and avoid tight bends, kinks or crushing. Leviton’s guide recommends keeping pulling force below 25 pounds and making one bend at a time; follow the cable manufacturer’s bend-radius guidance and use sweeping bends. The 25-pound figure is the guide’s recommendation for its residential structured-cabling context, not a measured guarantee for every cable or route. Leviton Basic Residential Installer Guide.
Support the cable with products intended for low-voltage cable, such as J-hooks or hook-and-loop straps, without pinching it. Leviton cautions against standard staples. Label both ends so the run can be identified at the equipment location and wall outlet. Before closing access, inspect the cable for visible damage and confirm that it is supported and routed as intended.

For Leviton’s structured-cabling setup, the category cable run from the structured media enclosure to a wallplate is limited to 90 meters (295 feet). This is the guide’s stated limit for that context; it does not determine whether a particular installation complies with local rules. Leviton Basic Residential Installer Guide.
When to get local or professional advice
- The route passes through, or may affect, a fire-rated wall or fire blocking.
- The cable would enter a plenum or other air-handling space and you are unsure which jacket rating applies.
- Existing electrical wiring or other hidden services cannot be located confidently, or the intended route cannot maintain appropriate separation.
- You are unsure whether drilling a framing member is permitted, how a penetration must be protected or firestopped, or what local code requires.
For those conditions, consult the local authority having jurisdiction or a qualified electrician or low-voltage installer before drilling or pulling cable.
