Smartphone ecodesign requirements have applied to covered models placed on the EU market since 20 June 2025. A separate EU battery rule on removability and replaceability is scheduled to apply from 18 February 2027.
Will EU rules make smartphone batteries removable?
Not necessarily in the old sense of a user popping off the back cover and swapping a battery. The EU’s smartphone ecodesign regulation allows two routes: a replacement process a layperson can carry out with no tool, a supplied tool or basic tools, or a professional-repairer-only route that must satisfy specified battery-durability and ingress-protection conditions. The rules concern covered smartphones and related devices placed on the EU market; they do not require every phone to use the same design. When do the EU smartphone battery rules start?
The dates refer to two distinct measures, not one blanket switch to user-removable batteries.

The Commission announced the smartphone requirements’ start date in its 20 June 2025 update. Article 11’s “readily removable” wording has its own meaning, including use of commercially available tools and restrictions on removal methods involving thermal energy or solvents. Can you replace your phone battery yourself?
It depends on the model’s chosen compliance route and its instructions. Under the layperson route, the replacement process must be possible without tools, with a supplied tool, or with basic tools. That does not guarantee an old-style snap-off back, nor does it establish that a particular phone’s battery is user-replaceable; check the exact model’s repair documentation.
Under the professional-repairer-only alternative, the battery is made available only to professional repairers and the device must meet the regulation’s specified durability and ingress-protection conditions. The regulation sets minimum capacity thresholds of 83% after 500 full charge cycles and 80% after 1,000 full charge cycles for this alternative. These are legal compliance thresholds, not independent test results or a promise that every phone will retain that capacity in ordinary use.

What could the rules mean for repairs?
The ecodesign requirements also include repair and spare-parts provisions. The Commission says covered critical spare parts must be supplied to repairers within 5–10 working days and remain available until seven years after sales of the model end on the EU market. These are the Commission’s summary figures; the regulation specifies categories and conditions. They do not mean repairs are free, that consumers can buy every part directly, or that service is equally accessible everywhere.
For a real repair decision, compare the replacement method, parts availability, repair price and service location for the exact regional model and purchase date. A battery or kit must match the precise phone model and part; a generic kit does not make a professional-only repair suitable for a consumer.

What to check before buying a phone or replacement battery
- Replacement route: confirm whether the manufacturer describes the battery replacement as user-accessible or professional-only.
- Model match: verify the exact model number and battery part number before buying a replacement or tools.
- Repair support: check parts availability, repair timing, cost and local service options rather than assuming the regulation makes repair convenient or inexpensive.
- Regional details: confirm the EU-market model and when it was placed on sale; regulatory coverage does not establish identical experiences across all devices or regions.
