It is discontinued: AppBrain records the app as removed from Google Play in 2014, with its last listed update in 2012. It should not be treated as a current Play Store download.
What Skifta did
Skifta made an Android phone or tablet a media controller: you selected a source and a destination, then sent the media to a compatible device. Qualcomm described access to content stored on the Android device, in cloud services, or remotely at home. Named playback destinations included televisions, network-connected stereos, Windows 7 PCs, and PlayStation 3 consoles.
Qualcomm announced in February 2011 that Skifta was the first DLNA-certified software application. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) certification was intended to help compatible devices share media over a network. In practical terms, Skifta was not simply a video player: it helped find or select media and direct it to a playback device.
How the historical setup worked
Choose media and a playback device
The app’s design was to select media from a phone, an online source, or a remote home source, then choose a DLNA-compatible player. Qualcomm’s launch announcement listed Android 2.2 or later as the app’s baseline. These are historical requirements and features, not a guarantee that the app or the named services still work today.

Reach media stored on a home computer
Skifta 1.0 added Wi-Fi and 3G support and a desktop media-server plug-in for Mac, Windows, and Linux. The plug-in was intended to make collections on a home computer available to the app. The release also described a channel library for selected internet and cloud sources alongside local media. The historical announcements do not establish that those services remain accessible.
Distinguish the consumer app from Skifta Engine
In 2012, Qualcomm Atheros announced Skifta Engine, an embedded product for original equipment manufacturers, including NAS drives, smart routers, and set-top boxes. The Java-based DLNA suite could provide Digital Media Controller and Digital Media Server roles, and, with compatible hardware, a Digital Media Renderer role. That OEM product direction was separate from the Android app; it does not mean Skifta is available as a current consumer service.

Can you download Skifta for Android now?
AppBrain records Skifta as unpublished from Google Play on June 1, 2014. Its listing gives version 1.57.07 and a last update date of November 28, 2012. AppBrain also estimates 2.2 million downloads; that is a third-party estimate, not a download total published by Qualcomm or a count of current installations. The available record is from an app tracker, not a current Qualcomm support notice.
Because Skifta is no longer listed on Google Play, do not assume that an APK found elsewhere is official, safe, or compatible with a modern Android device. The historical Android 2.2 baseline does not establish present-day compatibility or support.

What to use for a similar Android task
PlayOnDlna for a limited local-network workflow
F-Droid lists PlayOnDlna as an Android app that prepares supported audio or video links and streams them to discovered DLNA players on the local network. Its listing shows version 1.15, added September 7, 2026, and requires Android 8.0 or newer. This is an adjacent option for local-network link casting, not evidence that it duplicates Skifta’s historical remote access, channel library, or full feature set.
Check whether an app browses, controls, or plays media
These roles are easy to confuse. An app may browse or select media, act as a controller that sends it to another device, serve files from a phone or computer, or simply play a stream it has been given. MX Player’s support page says it can play most DLNA content but cannot browse DLNA content itself; it gives Skifta, ES Browser, and UPnPlayer as examples of apps that can hand off a video URL. A player able to consume a stream is not necessarily a tool for discovering media servers.

What to check before relying on DLNA
- Destination: Confirm that the television, stereo, console, or other playback device exposes a DLNA/UPnP renderer. A device category alone does not establish compatibility for a particular model.
- Network: For a local-network app such as PlayOnDlna, make sure the phone and player can discover one another on the same network.
- Media format: Check that the playback device supports the audio or video format you intend to stream.
- App role and source: Verify whether the app browses servers, accepts a link, serves files, or controls playback—and whether it supports the source you need.
- Android requirement: Compare the app’s stated minimum Android version with the device you plan to use.
The cited announcements identify types of compatible destinations, not a current hardware compatibility list. They do not verify specific models, prices, or whether newly sold equipment will work with Skifta.
