A four-day workweek is not necessarily a shorter workweek. The key question is how many hours an employee works: a reduced-hours four-day week cuts total weekly working time, while compressed hours fit broadly the same weekly hours into fewer, longer shifts. Four 10-hour days in a 40-hour week are compressed hours, not a reduction in working time.
How is a four-day workweek different from compressed hours?
“Four-day week” can describe different schedules, so compare the actual weekly hours, daily shift lengths, pay, and coverage rather than relying on the label.
| What to compare | Reduced-hours four-day week | Compressed hours |
|---|---|---|
| Total weekly hours | Lower than the employee’s baseline | Broadly maintained, but distributed across fewer days |
| Daily shifts | May remain similar or be adjusted modestly, depending on the model | Longer days are characteristic |
| Pay | May be maintained, as in the UK pilot, but the employer’s policy matters | Depends on the employer agreement and applicable local rules |
| Main operational question | Can work and coverage be redesigned around fewer total hours? | Can longer shifts be sustained, and how will work be covered on the day off? |
In the UK trial, Professor Brendan Burchell described a four-day working week as shorthand for a 20% reduction in working time, and explicitly distinguished it from working longer days without reducing hours. UK Research and Innovation explains the distinction. A reduced-hours model might give someone a day off or reduce time across several days; a four-day pattern is one possible distribution, not a requirement.
For example, an employee whose usual schedule is five eight-hour days works 40 hours a week. Switching to four 10-hour days preserves those 40 hours and compresses them. Working four eight-hour days instead reduces the total to 32 hours, assuming breaks and paid time are counted consistently with the employer’s policy.

Should an employer reduce hours or compress them?
Choose based on the intended change. If the aim is less total working time and more time away from work, a reduced-hours model matches that goal. If the aim is to give employees an additional day away while maintaining weekly hours, compression may fit—but it means longer shifts, not fewer hours.
- Consider reduced hours when the organization can redesign processes, priorities, or staffing so employees have fewer hours without simply squeezing the same workload into less time.
- Consider compressed hours when longer shifts are appropriate for the work and employees can recover between them. Check shift length, handovers, coverage, and whether the arrangement creates fatigue or attendance problems.
- Do not assume either model guarantees unchanged output. Productivity evidence varies by setting, and a schedule label alone says little about workload or service quality.
Pay is a separate policy decision from schedule distribution. State explicitly whether pay and benefits stay the same, change in proportion to hours, or follow another arrangement; do not imply that either model automatically determines pay.

What does the evidence say about reduced-hours four-day weeks?
A UK pilot ran from June to December 2022. According to UKRI’s 2024 summary, 61 participating organizations committed to a 20% reduction in hours without a pay reduction for six months. At the end of the trial, 90% of participating workers wanted to continue. Workers reported improvements including less stress (39%), lower burnout (more than two thirds), and fewer sleep difficulties (40%). The organizations reported a 65% reduction in sick days and a 57% fall in staff leaving. These are outcomes reported for the participating organizations and workers; the voluntary pilot does not establish that every employer will get the same results.
Revenue increased by an average of 1.4% among the 23 organizations able to provide revenue data during the trial period. That figure is not a controlled estimate of a causal profit or productivity effect, and it does not represent all 61 organizations. UKRI’s account also describes implementation changes such as shorter meetings and technology use, rather than assuming that the same tasks can simply be done faster. A separate multi-country study published in Nature Human Behaviour in 2025 analyzed pre- and post-trial data from 2,896 employees at 141 organizations across six countries; 12 companies served as controls. It reported improvements in burnout, job satisfaction, mental health, and physical health in the intervention group, unlike the control companies. The results support potential benefits from reduced working time, but they do not show that every four-day schedule—or a compressed schedule—has the same effect. PubMed indexes the study.
What are the risks of compressed hours?
A 2025 systematic review of 20 studies found varied results across compressed schedules and settings. Of 15 studies examining health and wellbeing, 11 reported at least one significantly negative outcome, 10 at least one non-significant outcome, and six at least one significantly positive outcome. These categories overlap because a study could report more than one kind of result. The reviewers found moderate support for greater schedule satisfaction, as well as moderate support for increased sickness absence in compressed schedules—particularly extended shifts of at least 12 hours in analyses controlling for weekly hours. Findings on other outcomes were mixed or insufficient for conclusions.

The review covers different shift-work contexts and schedule lengths. Its results should not be treated as a precise risk estimate for every office-based four-by-ten schedule. In practice, distinguish a 10-hour day from a shift of 12 hours or more, and monitor recovery, sleep, absence, and workload rather than assuming all compressed patterns are equivalent. Read the systematic review in the International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health.

There is no universal productivity guarantee for either arrangement. The OECD’s evidence review says the effects of reducing normal hours are less studied than the effects of long hours and vary by setting. It discusses differing results from reforms in France and Korea, and an experiment among Dutch call-centre workers in which hourly productivity declined as effective hours increased. Those context-specific findings cannot establish what will happen in a different workplace. See the OECD evidence review.

For reduced hours, the practical challenge is to redesign work rather than compress the same workload into fewer hours. For compressed hours, assess whether longer shifts affect output, quality, safety, or service access. In both cases, compare like-for-like measures over a meaningful period; do not judge success on hours or revenue alone.
How to compare the schedules in a workplace
- Record the baseline. Document weekly hours, shift lengths, pay, workload, coverage, handovers, service levels, absence, retention, and relevant output or quality measures.
- Define the goal. Decide whether the proposal is to reduce total working time or redistribute broadly unchanged hours across fewer days.
- Consult employees and representatives. Ask about preferred schedules, workload, recovery, and constraints that may differ by role or team.
- Specify the arrangement. Set weekly hours, shift lengths, days off, pay and benefits, coverage, handover responsibilities, and how urgent work will be handled.
- Pilot and evaluate. Track employee-reported wellbeing and workload alongside output, service levels, quality, absence, retention, and unit cost. Review implementation and stakeholder feedback, then adjust or stop the model if it does not meet its goals.
Eurofound recommends evaluating implementation and comparing the economic, social, and environmental effects of reduced-time four-day weeks with compressed schedules. Read Eurofound’s working paper on four-day working weeks. Long-term, occupation-specific head-to-head evidence remains limited, so a workplace pilot should be treated as a local test, not proof of a universal best schedule.
