That is a Qualcomm demonstration result, not an independent test or a promise about every phone using the chip.
What Qualcomm demonstrated
On February 23, 2023, Qualcomm AI Research described what it called its first on-device Android smartphone demonstration of Stable Diffusion. The starting point was the FP32 version of Stable Diffusion 1.5, a text-to-image diffusion model. Qualcomm reported generating a 512 × 512-pixel image in under 15 seconds with 20 inference steps. Qualcomm’s original demonstration account identifies Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as the platform.
The result shows that an image-generation pipeline could run locally on that platform after engineering work to adapt the model. It does not establish how quickly an unmodified model, a particular consumer app, or every Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handset will generate an image.
How Qualcomm adapted Stable Diffusion for the phone
Stable Diffusion generates an image through repeated denoising steps. Qualcomm’s description identifies three pipeline components: a text encoder, the UNet that is run repeatedly during denoising, and a VAE decoder. To fit and run the model on the target hardware, the company reports applying post-training quantization to convert the model from FP32 to INT8, compiling it with Qualcomm AI Engine Direct, and using hardware acceleration.

Quantization and compilation
Reducing numerical precision can lower memory-bandwidth requirements and make a model more practical to run on a device. Qualcomm says its INT8 approach used techniques including Adaptive Rounding to maintain accuracy. Qualcomm AI Engine Direct was used to map and sequence operations for the target hardware and its memory hierarchy. These are Qualcomm’s reported implementation details, not evidence that every retail app uses the same optimization.
Prompt input
Qualcomm’s authors wrote that “User text input is completely unconstrained.” That describes prompt input in this particular demonstration; it should not be read as a general guarantee about content policies or restrictions in other Stable Diffusion applications and services.

What “ultra-low power” does—and does not—mean here
Qualcomm explains that quantization can reduce memory bandwidth and power use, but its February 2023 article gives no measured wattage, energy-per-image figure, battery-life test, or quantified battery saving. The demonstration therefore supports a claim about on-device inference and Qualcomm’s power-efficiency rationale, not a specific battery-life improvement or measured power level.
How the later Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 result differs
In a separate November 2023 follow-up, Qualcomm described a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Stable Diffusion demonstration that took less than one second. That is a later result on a newer platform after further optimization work—not the timing of the February Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 demonstration. The follow-up does not establish that its benchmark configuration was identical to the earlier 512 × 512, 20-step result. Read Qualcomm’s November 2023 follow-up.

Can Stable Diffusion run on an Android phone now?
Qualcomm AI Hub currently lists Stable Diffusion 1.5 with mobile targets, including Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. That listing provides platform context, but it does not identify the retail phone used in the 2023 demonstration or prove identical performance across phones with that chipset. The February account does not name a handset model, so the result should be understood as a platform demonstration rather than a verified benchmark for a particular product.
