DLSS 3 Frame Generation can raise the number of frames a GPU displays by synthesizing intermediate frames—but displayed FPS is not the same as the game’s underlying rendered FPS or its input responsiveness. NVIDIA’s launch claims promised major performance gains; Digital Foundry’s early analysis examined the image quality, latency, synchronization, and capture conditions needed to judge those claims fairly.
What DLSS 3 Frame Generation does
At launch in 2022, NVIDIA presented DLSS 3 as three complementary technologies: Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Reflex. Frame Generation uses current and previous game frames, an optical-flow field, and game-engine information such as motion vectors and depth to synthesize an additional frame between rendered ones. The game does not separately render every frame that appears on screen.
Super Resolution reconstructs image detail, while Reflex synchronizes CPU and GPU work to reduce system latency. They have different roles: Frame Generation creates intermediate frames, Super Resolution reconstructs the image, and Reflex targets latency. NVIDIA’s launch materials specified GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs for DLSS 3 Frame Generation; that is a launch-era compatibility statement, not a claim about later DLSS generations or subsequent compatibility changes. NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 explainer and its September 2022 launch announcement describe the technology and its initial positioning.
Why generated frames can look different
Optical flow can account for pixel-level effects such as shadows, reflections, particles, and lighting that conventional engine motion vectors may not fully describe. But reconstructing these effects is difficult: NVIDIA’s Ada architecture paper acknowledges potential ghosting, stutter, and blurriness, particularly when effects lack the motion information available for scene geometry. Frame Generation is therefore an interpolation and reconstruction technique with image-quality tradeoffs, not simply a way to double the number of fully rendered game frames.

What the early Digital Foundry analysis examined
Digital Foundry published its DLSS 3 analysis on October 12, 2022. Its chapter list shows a broad set of test questions rather than a single FPS comparison: how the feature behaves with V-Sync, at lower frame rates, around cyclical animation and scene transitions, and with HUD elements, thin transparency, rapid flashes, or disocclusion during erratic mouse movement. It also identifies 4K/120Hz capture methodology, comparison to 4K/120 output, and latency analysis as topics. The Digital Foundry analysis is useful for understanding what an early evaluation needed to probe.
The available chapter listing does not provide full benchmark tables or exact measurement results. No specific FPS or latency outcome should be attributed to that analysis on the basis of its listing alone.

How to judge performance claims fairly
A displayed-frame counter is only one part of the picture. A sound evaluation separates four questions:
- Rendered rate versus displayed rate: How many frames did the game render, and how many appeared on screen after Frame Generation? Those rates are not interchangeable.
- Responsiveness: How quickly do input and game response reach the display? A higher displayed rate does not by itself establish lower input latency.
- Image stability: Do motion, interface elements, scene changes, or effects reveal artifacts such as ghosting, blur, or stutter?
- Synchronization and capture: What were the V-Sync and refresh-rate settings, and how was output captured? These conditions affect how a comparison should be interpreted.
Digital Foundry’s listed topics reflect these distinctions. Its chapter titles pose practical questions including whether DLSS 3 works with V-Sync, whether it looks good or works well at lower frame rates, and whether Frame Generation can be used without DLSS Image Reconstruction. Those are evaluation questions, not evidence by themselves of a particular result.

What NVIDIA’s launch numbers mean
NVIDIA advertised performance gains of up to 4x in particular comparisons and up to 2x lower latency in its 2022 launch technical material. These are vendor claims tied to NVIDIA’s stated comparisons and configurations, not independent measurements or guarantees for every game, starting frame rate, or system. The phrase “up to” describes a peak claim, not a typical outcome. NVIDIA also announced more than 35 games and applications with DLSS 3 support at launch; that is an announcement count from 2022, not a current support total. See NVIDIA’s launch explainer and Ada architecture technical paper for the vendor’s framing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the distinction matters to players
Frame Generation may make motion appear smoother by increasing displayed frames, but that alone does not tell you how responsive controls feel or whether the image remains clean during fast movement and complex transitions. To assess a particular game, compare rendered and displayed rates where possible, consider latency separately, and inspect the image under the kinds of motion and interface conditions that can challenge interpolation. Results depend on the game, settings, and hardware; the early chapter list identifies relevant questions but does not supply enough measurement data to settle them numerically.
