A Reddit user says a BIOS update hung on a high-end PC, and the system then repeatedly froze at motherboard Q-Code 92. The author reports trying BIOS FlashBack, clearing CMOS and replacing several components without resolving the problem. The cause remains unknown: the post is a first-person account, not a manufacturer diagnosis, and its stated $20,000 cost has not been independently verified.
What happened to the builder’s PC
In a post titled “How I Lost $20,000 on a Computer Build (please help),” Reddit user joel_motion says the machine had booted successfully before an update run through the BIOS interface stalled. The author says they eventually powered the PC down, after which it repeatedly froze at Q-Code 92. The post does not establish the exact motherboard model or confirm that the update permanently damaged firmware. Read the account on Reddit.
The author describes a build begun in late 2024, with most parts purchased in November of that year, including two RTX 4090 graphics cards and extensive water cooling. Those details, as well as the stated $20,000 at risk, are the author’s account rather than an audited parts list or verified loss. They mention plans changing around the RTX 5090 launch; the post does not provide independent evidence about the build’s final configuration or value.
The reported troubleshooting included FlashBack and CMOS-clear attempts, motherboard RMAs, and replacements or changes involving the GPU, CPU, RAM and power supply. The author says the same freeze remained. A repair shop reportedly suspected a chipset issue but lacked compatible parts to confirm it. Neither that suspicion nor the component swaps identify a faulty part. The author’s question—“Do I just RMA the motherboard a 4th time?”—captures the predicament, not a confirmed next step or outcome.

What a failed BIOS update can—and cannot—tell you
AMD describes BIOS and UEFI as “motherboard firmware that help a PC start up.” Firmware is distinct from Windows and ordinary applications; a system that cannot POST after an update needs a recovery path supported by its specific motherboard. An unsupported processor can also prevent booting, but a single Q-Code and a sequence of events do not prove that firmware—or any particular component—is the cause. AMD’s Ryzen desktop BIOS guidance, last updated August 12, 2026, recommends using the system or motherboard maker’s instructions and lists recovery options for machines that cannot boot.
Choose a recovery route for the exact motherboard
Before trying another fix, identify the full motherboard model and revision from its label, box, purchase record or board markings if accessible. Then use that manufacturer’s documentation to determine what recovery methods the board supports. BIOS FlashBack is not a universal feature, and procedures differ by maker and model.

AMD’s guidance includes contacting the manufacturer for support or an RMA among the options when a system cannot boot. That is a more grounded next step than cycling through unrelated part replacements once the board-specific recovery path has been checked.
Why FlashBack instructions must match the board
ASUS says to confirm FlashBack support in the exact board’s product specifications or manual. Its procedure specifies a USB drive of at least 1 GB, formatted as single-sector FAT16/32 MBR; the correct extracted BIOS file renamed as instructed and placed in the drive root; and the designated FlashBack USB port. The ASUS instructions say to keep power connected, hold the button for three seconds until the indicator signals activation, then wait for the light to go out. Duration depends on file size. Do not remove the drive or power, or press CLR_CMOS, while the operation is running. If ASUS’s interrupted-update recovery procedure fails, it advises contacting an ASUS service center. Other makers use different requirements. ASRock’s 2026 guide, for example, specifies a FAT32 drive, a model-specific BIOS file renamed “creative.rom,” the 24-pin motherboard power connector and a designated USB port; it calls for a roughly three-second button press and waiting for the LED to stop blinking. Intel’s cited recovery page applies to Intel server boards, not consumer desktop boards. It describes a board-specific recovery jumper and FAT32 USB media, and points users to the release notes for the relevant board family. When to stop and ask for help
- If the motherboard manual does not list FlashBack or another recovery method, do not assume a similar-looking button or port performs it.
- If a supported FlashBack attempt fails, double-check the model, firmware file, filename, filesystem and specified USB port against the manual before retrying.
- Keep power and media connected during an active update, and do not interrupt it unless the manufacturer instructs you to.
- If the documented recovery fails or you cannot verify the correct procedure, contact the board maker or a qualified technician with compatible diagnostic equipment.
- Do not treat clearing CMOS as a firmware-recovery substitute. It resets settings; the cited manufacturer procedures address firmware recovery separately.
A USB flash drive for BIOS FlashBack is useful only when the exact board supports that process and the drive meets its format and file requirements. The right next action is the board maker’s documented recovery or service route—not a generic promise that any flash drive, repair shop or component swap will fix the system.
