To file a claim in a U.S. class action settlement, use the official case website or notice to confirm you qualify, check the benefit and proof requirements, submit the completed claim by an allowed method before the exact deadline, and save confirmation. The settlement notice, agreement, claim form, court orders, and administrator instructions for your specific case control; procedures and rights vary by settlement.

1. Find and verify the official settlement website

Start with the notice you received, a court-hosted case page, or settlement administrator details you can verify independently. Confirm the case name and administrator before entering personal information or uploading documents. A notice should identify the settlement website and explain how to access case documents and the docket. For a federal case, the court docket may be available through PACER; the Northern District of California’s settlement guidance recommends checking the settlement site or PACER for changes to hearing dates. That is local court guidance, not a nationwide procedural rule.

2. Check whether you are in the settlement class

Read the settlement’s class definition and compare its dates, transactions, account types, or other criteria with your own records. Receiving an advertisement, email, or notice does not by itself establish eligibility. Some settlements use an identifier tied to a person’s account or notice; others describe a process for people who cannot use the ordinary notice. If you are unsure, contact the administrator using contact details on the verified case website.

3. Understand the benefit and your choices

Read what the settlement offers and what you must do to receive it. Possible benefits include a flat payment, reimbursement for documented losses, a voucher, credit monitoring, or another remedy, but no list applies to every case. If there are different benefit categories, compare their value and proof requirements using the settlement’s own documents.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep the claim, objection, and exclusion (opt-out) choices separate:

  • Claim: Requests a benefit under the settlement.
  • Objection: Asks the court to consider an objection to the proposed settlement. It does not itself file a payment claim.
  • Exclusion (opt-out): Asks to be excluded from the settlement class, subject to the case’s rules and deadline. In a federal Rule 23(b)(3) action, the notice framework provides for a right to request exclusion by a specified date and explains the binding effect of a judgment on class members who do not exclude themselves.

Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23 provides the federal framework for class actions, including notice, exclusion, and the binding effect of a judgment. Read the court-approved notice for the actual options, deadlines, and consequences in your case; see Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23.

4. Gather only the information the form requests

Use the claim form’s checklist rather than a generic list of documents. Depending on the settlement, it may request a notice ID, purchase or account details, a signature, or records supporting a claimed loss. For example, the ASI Foods settlement FAQ describes proof-of-purchase instructions for a category of members, while the USC settlement FAQ asks for a unique ID. Those are case-specific examples, not universal requirements.

Do not invent documentation or send unrelated sensitive records. If you cannot provide something the form requires, check the official instructions or ask the administrator what the settlement allows.

5. Complete the claim form accurately

Follow the form’s instructions and check your answers against your records. Review your name and contact details, claim category, amounts and calculations, certifications, and any signature fields. A court-hosted settlement document describes claim review for completeness, timeliness, and compliance with the settlement terms; the standard applied in your case is set by its own documents.

6. Submit by an allowed method before the exact deadline

Use only a submission method the settlement expressly permits. Some case websites offer an online form; some settlements also accept a printed form by mail. The deadline may require online receipt by a stated time, a postmark by a date, or actual receipt by a date. Follow the exact wording in your notice and allow time for delivery or processing where relevant. Administrator instructions vary; for examples, see the ASI Foods settlement FAQ and USC settlement FAQ.

7. Keep records and respond to any follow-up

Retain your claim number, confirmation, submitted materials, supporting documents, and correspondence. Check the administrator’s official site for status updates and instructions for reporting an address change. If the administrator says information is missing, follow the case’s stated process promptly. A court-approved order in one settlement describes an opportunity to cure deficiencies for specified claimants, but whether you have that opportunity depends on your settlement’s agreement and orders.

8. Wait for review and distribution

Filing a claim does not establish when or whether it will be accepted or paid. Review, final court approval, appeals, and other settlement terms can affect distribution. The administrator’s case-specific updates and controlling court documents—not just the claim deadline or hearing date—are the best sources for timing information. For examples of how timing is described in particular cases, see the ASI Foods settlement FAQ and USC settlement FAQ.

Protect yourself from fake notices

Be cautious if a message asks for unusual personal information or money. The District of Arizona warned about fake case documents requesting banking and other personal details, and advised recipients not to send personal information or money to the sender. That warning concerned a specific case; it does not establish that every legitimate settlement handles information the same way. Verify an unexpected request by contacting the administrator through details on an independently confirmed official case website. The district’s scam alert describes the case-specific warning.
