Nintendo says Nintendo Switch 2 supports variable refresh rate (VRR) in TV mode following a system update released September 10, 2026. The feature was feared missing in a 2025 report, but that report drew an uncertain conclusion from a change in Nintendo’s product-page wording—not a confirmed removal.
What happened to the docked VRR feature?
The April 17, 2025 HotHardware report, “Nintendo Switch 2 May Have Just Lost A Major Feature For Docked Gaming”, focused on VRR in TV mode. It inferred that the feature might be absent after Nintendo’s product-page wording changed, while acknowledging that the page could still be undergoing last-minute edits. It did not establish that Nintendo had confirmed VRR was removed.
Nintendo’s later update information resolves the question: system update 23.0.0, released September 10, 2026, added TV-mode VRR. Nintendo’s current Switch 2 feature information also lists TV-mode support.
What you need to use VRR on a TV
For VRR in TV mode, Nintendo’s guidance calls for compatible software, a compatible television, and an updated Nintendo Switch 2 dock. The system itself also needs the update that adds TV-mode support. Nintendo says, “If supported by both the software and your TV, the refresh rate output will be adjusted based on the software’s performance.” See Nintendo’s system update information and Switch 2 FAQ.

- Install system update 23.0.0 or a later update.
- Update the Nintendo Switch 2 dock as prompted or required by the system.
- Connect the console to a VRR-compatible TV.
- Use software that supports VRR, then check the console’s display settings for the VRR Output setting while playing in TV mode.
The setting does not make every game VRR-compatible. Nintendo says support varies by game, so the effect depends on the title as well as the display.
What VRR changes—and what it does not
VRR adjusts the display’s refresh rate to follow the game’s processing, which can help keep motion smooth when performance varies. It does not raise a game’s resolution or guarantee a particular frame rate. Nintendo’s FAQ says VRR is available in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes; a compatible TV is required for TV-mode use.

Keep resolution and frame rate separate from VRR: Nintendo says 4K output on Switch 2 is limited to a maximum of 60 fps. VRR’s availability does not remove that output limit or promise that a game will run at 60 fps.
