For resisting phishing during sign-in, a PlayStation passkey has the stronger design. It uses a cryptographic credential tied to PlayStation’s service domain, whereas two-step verification (2SV) asks you to enter a password and a separate code. That advantage is specific to sign-in phishing: it does not make an account immune to a compromised device, unsafe recovery, or every other way an attacker might gain access.
How PlayStation passkeys and 2SV differ
Passkeys use a cryptographic credential
A passkey is a public-key credential. PlayStation stores the public key; sign-in is approved using the corresponding private key associated with your device or credential provider. Because the credential is scoped to the real service domain, a lookalike site cannot simply collect and replay it as it might a password and code. FIDO Alliance explains this domain-bound design in its passkeys overview and authentication specifications.
Your device may ask you to approve a passkey with a fingerprint, face recognition, PIN, or another local method. If biometrics are used, the biometric information stays on the device; it is not sent to PlayStation as the passkey credential.
2SV adds a separate code to a password
With PlayStation 2SV, you enter your sign-in ID and password, then a verification code delivered by SMS or generated in an authenticator app. Sony may request the code in situations such as your first sign-in after enabling 2SV, after you manually sign out, after a password reset, or after a change to your sign-in ID or online ID. Sony says a code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt.

2SV adds a second step, but the password and code flow is not domain-bound in the same way as a passkey. A convincing fake sign-in page can try to trick someone into entering both credentials.
Which is more secure?
If the question is specifically which method better resists phishing at sign-in, choose a passkey when Sony’s flow works with your devices. FIDO describes passkeys as phishing-resistant because authentication uses domain-bound public-key cryptography. A password plus SMS or authenticator code can be phished if you enter the details on a fake site.

This is a comparison of authentication design, not a measured PlayStation account-takeover rate. Sony’s support material and FIDO’s standards explanation do not establish a universal ranking for every recovery setup or device configuration. Neither method guarantees protection if an attacker controls your device, your recovery route, or your account through another attack.

Passkeys can be synced by a credential provider or tied to one device. Syncing can make a passkey available on more of your devices; a device-bound passkey depends on keeping or replacing that particular device. The precise options depend on the provider and device, so follow Sony’s PlayStation account instructions for account-level changes.

Set up a PlayStation passkey
- From the web: Sign in to PlayStation Account Management, open Security, enable Sign in with Passkey, select Create a Passkey, and follow the prompts on your device.
- From PS5: Open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security, then follow the passkey setup prompts.
- Prepare access on another device: Sony lets you add multiple passkeys. If you lose a phone, you may be able to sign in using the same verification method registered on another device and then register a new passkey.
If passkey sign-in fails, Sony’s flow includes Can’t Sign In with Passkey, with sign-in by email or QR code as alternatives. Sony warns that some device combinations may need this fallback. Scan only QR codes you trust, and sign out when using a shared device.
Turn on 2SV and protect your recovery options
- Open PlayStation Account Management and go to Security, then follow Sony’s 2SV setup instructions.
- Choose SMS or an authenticator app and complete the verification steps Sony presents.
- Record the backup codes during setup. Keep them somewhere safe and separate from the phone or app you use for codes. Each code works once.
If you lose access to the phone or authenticator and do not have a backup code, Sony says you may need to contact PlayStation Support to restore access. Check Sony’s current help for 2-step verification issues for the recovery route that applies to your account.

Which should you choose?
Choose a passkey if phishing resistance is your priority
Use a passkey if your devices and browser work with Sony’s current sign-in flow, and first make sure you have a viable way to regain access if a device is lost or replaced. You do not need to buy a separate hardware key to use a passkey; Sony notes that some hardware security keys may have compatibility issues.
Use 2SV if passkeys are unavailable or unreliable for you
If your device combination does not support Sony’s passkey flow, or sign-in repeatedly fails, 2SV remains a documented option. Pick SMS or an authenticator app based on which you can reliably access, and save the backup codes before you need them.

Check account side effects before switching
If you rely on Sony’s “Password at Checkout” prompt, check the current account settings and support guidance before enabling passkeys: Sony says that prompt is incompatible with passkey-enabled accounts. Sony also recommends a password manager or passkey as a security practice; a password manager is not required to use a PlayStation passkey.
