AutoHotkey is a Windows automation tool, not inherently malware, but safety depends on where you get it and what scripts you run. Its scripts can intercept, remap, suppress, or simulate keystrokes, so they can make a keyboard behave unexpectedly while they are active. The documented behavior concerns software-controlled input; it is not evidence that AutoHotkey physically damages a keyboard.
Is AutoHotkey safe to use?
AutoHotkey is a free, open-source Windows automation scripting utility, according to the AutoHotkey project. It can automate tasks by responding to hotkeys and controlling keyboard input. The project says version 1 is no longer maintained and directs support questions to version-specific community forums.
That description does not make every download or script safe. Get the software from the official project, and inspect unfamiliar scripts before running them. A script can have effects beyond the specific keystroke behavior you expect, so consider its contents and source rather than treating all AutoHotkey scripts as trustworthy.
My antivirus flagged AutoHotkey. Does that mean it is malware?
Not necessarily. The AutoHotkey project’s Safe Browsing guidance says browser warnings and antivirus false positives have occurred. It explains that vendors may not have seen executable files included in a new release before. A detection is not, by itself, proof that a file is infected—or proof that it is safe.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you suspect a false positive, the project recommends submitting the executable to your antivirus vendor for analysis. Do not disable antivirus protection just to bypass an alert. Check that the download came from the official project, and treat an unfamiliar script as a separate item to review.
Can AutoHotkey make my keyboard stop working?
It can make some keys seem blocked or behave differently while a script is running. AutoHotkey supports hotkeys and keyboard hooks, and its v2 InputHook documentation describes collecting or intercepting keyboard input; suppression depends on the script’s configuration. Scripts can also remap keys or send simulated keystrokes.

This is a software-input issue, not evidence of physical keyboard damage. To narrow it down, use this sequence:
- Check whether AutoHotkey or a compiled AutoHotkey script is running.
- Exit it temporarily, then test whether ordinary typing returns to normal.
- If the problem stops, inspect the script for hotkeys, remappings, InputHook use, and its configured send mode.
- If the problem continues after the script exits, investigate Windows, other keyboard utilities, or the keyboard itself separately.
This stop-and-test sequence is a practical way to isolate a script-related cause; it is not a diagnosis of every keyboard problem.

Why can simulated keystrokes behave inconsistently?
AutoHotkey v2’s Send documentation says Send defaults to SendInput unless SendMode changes that mapping. It describes SendInput as generally faster and more reliable than SendEvent, while noting that other low-level keyboard hooks and application behavior can affect simulated input.
Windows privilege boundaries can matter too: UI Privilege Isolation may prevent a script from sending input to an application running with higher privileges in some cases. These are limitations on automation and interaction, not signs that a keyboard has been damaged.
