Herodotus is an Android banking trojan built for device takeover. ThreatFabric reports that it can enter operator-provided text one character at a time, inserting randomized delays of 300–3,000 milliseconds between input events in an attempt to make remote activity look more like human typing. That is an evasion technique, not proof that the malware is undetectable or defeats security controls.

What is Herodotus malware?

Herodotus is an Android banking trojan that combines credential theft with remote control of an infected device. ThreatFabric describes it as a new threat containing some Brokewell components alongside original code, rather than a direct evolution of Brokewell. Its capabilities go beyond displaying a fake login page: the malware can use Android Accessibility Services to observe and manipulate activity on the device.

ThreatFabric reported that malicious distribution points delivered Herodotus samples alongside known malware. A possible delivery chain begins with an SMS-phishing message that directs a victim to a malicious dropper. The dropper attempts to install and launch the payload, which then asks the user to enable Accessibility Services. These are findings described in ThreatFabric’s 2025 technical report; they do not establish that every infection follows the same route.

How does Herodotus try to avoid detection?

It varies the pace of text entry

When an operator supplies text, Herodotus can split it into individual characters and send them with randomized delays of 300–3,000 milliseconds (0.3–3 seconds) between input events. ThreatFabric interprets this observed behavior as an attempt to imitate human interaction and evade systems that flag machine-like input speed. The range is a reported delay between events, not a measure of typing speed across infected users.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

A timing-only detector could be less likely to flag input that does not arrive at a uniformly rapid pace. But randomized timing does not make the activity reliably indistinguishable from a person, nor does it demonstrate that Herodotus bypasses any particular security system. ThreatFabric notes that individualized behavior models may still identify anomalies, and that behavior signals can be combined with information about the device and malware family or version.

It uses Accessibility Services for remote actions

ThreatFabric says operators can use Herodotus to click screen elements or coordinates, swipe, enter text, and invoke Android global actions such as Back, Home, and Recents. This can let an operator navigate a banking app and fill in transaction details. Accessibility-based screen logging can also capture what is displayed.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

What can Herodotus steal or do?

  • Credentials: It can display counterfeit login pages over targeted applications to capture account details.
  • SMS verification codes: ThreatFabric reports SMS interception, which can expose codes sent for two-factor authentication.
  • On-screen information: Accessibility logging can record displayed content.
  • Device interaction: Remote clicks, swipes, text entry, and system navigation support hands-on control rather than credential theft alone.

Together, these capabilities make Herodotus a device-takeover threat, not simply an app that imitates typing.

Where has Herodotus been observed?

ThreatFabric reported active campaigns targeting users in Italy and Brazil. In Italy, the malware used the app name “Banca Sicura” (“Safe Bank”); in Brazil, it used “Modulo Seguranca Stone.”

The same report says researchers obtained overlay pages aimed at financial organizations in the United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, and Poland, as well as cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges. Those overlay targets are not, by themselves, evidence of active campaigns in those countries or against every named service.

ThreatFabric also recorded seven active subdomains during its research, including developer and test infrastructure. That is an infrastructure observation, not a count of infected devices or victims.

Does Herodotus defeat Android security protections?

No available evidence establishes that it defeats Android protections in general. ThreatFabric’s findings describe an attempt to make remote text input look less machine-like; they do not show that the approach succeeds against every detection method. Timing heuristics can be one signal, while individualized behavior models, device-environment checks, and malware-family or version identification provide other ways to assess suspicious activity.

Google told Android Authority on October 29, 2025: “Based on our current detection, no apps containing this malware are found on Google Play. Android users are automatically protected against known versions of this malware by Google Play Protect, which is on by default on Android devices with Google Play Services. Google Play Protect can warn users or block apps known to exhibit malicious behavior, even when those apps come from sources outside of Play.” This is Google’s detection statement as reported on that date, not a guarantee about future variants or every Android device. How can you protect your Android phone?

  • Do not install an app from an unsolicited text-message link or another source you do not trust. ThreatFabric describes sideloading, potentially following an SMS-phishing message, as a delivery route.
  • Keep available Android protections enabled, including Google Play Protect on devices that support it.
  • Be cautious if an app asks you to enable Accessibility Services without a clear, necessary reason. Herodotus uses that access for logging and remote interaction.

Herodotus’s reported campaigns and Google’s detection status are time-sensitive findings, not a live guarantee of where the malware is operating or what every current version of Android will detect.
