MAINGEAR’s BYO RAM option lets customers supply compatible memory for a configured PC; MAINGEAR says it installs and tests the RAM before shipping. The company says supplying your own memory lowers the PC price without a separate BYO fee, but the amount varies by build and there is no universal advertised saving. It is not an option to receive a completed system with no RAM installed.

How MAINGEAR’s BYO RAM option works

You configure a system and provide a compatible memory kit, either one you already own or one purchased separately and shipped to MAINGEAR. The company says it installs the memory, tests the kit, and tunes settings for performance and stability before shipping the PC. Unused kits are returned with the system. For a kit you already own, MAINGEAR says it provides a prepaid envelope with fast two-day shipping; it recommends keeping the modules in the included clamshell tray and anti-static packaging.

MAINGEAR says it needs RAM installed to validate stability, tune the system, provide support, and cover the system under warranty. So BYO RAM means choosing who supplies the memory—not opting to have a finished PC shipped without it.

Which RAM can work with your build?

Compatibility depends on the exact system, not just the DDR generation. MAINGEAR’s current platforms use DDR5, and the company says DDR3 and DDR4 are not usable in its current systems. Its guide calls for DDR5 unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMMs) for gaming desktops built around AMD Ryzen or Intel Core Ultra. Laptop SODIMMs are physically and electrically different from desktop UDIMMs; registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) and UDIMMs are also not interchangeable. MAINGEAR says workstations with AMD Threadripper or Intel Xeon may use registered memory. Check the MAINGEAR compatibility guide against the exact system you are ordering.

Capacity and stick count

MAINGEAR lists these as common matched-pair configurations:

  • 32GB (2×16GB)
  • 64GB (2×32GB)
  • 128GB (2×64GB)

The company says it cannot use mixed-capacity sticks. One stick may work, but a matched pair is the common dual-channel arrangement and a single module can reduce performance. Non-binary capacities may be supported, but MAINGEAR describes them as more finicky.

Speed and platform stability

A kit’s rated speed does not guarantee that it will run at that speed in every build. Stability depends on the motherboard, CPU and its memory controller, as well as capacity and speed. MAINGEAR notes that high-speed kits may require tuning and four-stick configurations can be harder to optimize. Ask MAINGEAR to confirm the specific kit against your intended CPU and motherboard before sending it.

How much can you save?

MAINGEAR says customers pay less for the configured PC when they provide RAM and that there is no additional BYO service fee. The program page does not state a fixed dollar saving; the difference depends on the build and current memory prices. Compare the final configured price with the cost of obtaining a compatible kit, including shipping if you buy it separately. The available information does not establish that BYO is always the cheapest route.

MAINGEAR attributes current DDR5 price pressure to demand from AI infrastructure and prioritization of memory supply. Its program page characterizes increases for many DDR5 kits as “100% to 400+%”; that is MAINGEAR’s broad statement, not an independently verified statistic for every kit or retailer. In December 2025 launch coverage, TechSpot reported MAINGEAR CEO Wallace Santos saying the company’s cost had risen 394% for a 32GB kit and 344% for a 64GB kit. Those figures describe MAINGEAR’s costs as reported at that time, not current retail prices for all buyers (TechSpot, December 24, 2025).

Compare your three ways to get memory

Option What to check Who handles installation and validation?
Use RAM you already own Confirm the kit’s type, capacity, stick count, speed, and compatibility with the exact build; include any shipping effort in your comparison. MAINGEAR says it installs and tests the submitted kit.
Buy a kit separately and ship it to MAINGEAR Confirm compatibility before purchase and compare the kit’s price plus shipping with the configured system’s RAM cost. MAINGEAR says it installs and tests the submitted kit.
Use MAINGEAR-supplied RAM Compare the configured system’s final price and the convenience of having the memory sourced with the build. Memory is supplied as part of the build; BYO handling is not needed.

MAINGEAR says the supplied RAM remains covered by any applicable manufacturer warranty, while the system warranty and lifetime support are unaffected. The manufacturer’s RAM warranty is separate from MAINGEAR’s system warranty.

What to confirm before choosing BYO

  1. Choose the exact MAINGEAR system and configuration, including its CPU and platform.
  2. Check your kit’s DDR generation, form factor (UDIMM, SODIMM, or RDIMM), capacity, number of sticks, and rated speed against MAINGEAR’s compatibility guide.
  3. Send MAINGEAR the kit make and model and your intended PC configuration if you need confirmation. The company says compatibility depends on the particular kit and build.
  4. Compare the final system price with the total cost of using your own or separately purchased memory. Do not assume a fixed BYO discount.
  5. Follow MAINGEAR’s packing instructions if sending a kit you already own, and retain the manufacturer warranty details for the RAM.

MAINGEAR’s homepage advertises BYO RAM for custom desktops, workstations, and laptops, but memory types vary by platform. Check the live MAINGEAR homepage and configurator for current eligibility and pricing before ordering. No fixed program end date is stated on the reviewed program page.
