Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To reduce stringing, start with the printer-and-filament profile made for your machine, then tune retraction length and speed one at a time using a repeatable test. If strings persist, check nozzle temperature, filament moisture, nozzle residue, and hotend condition. There is no retraction value that works for every printer: extruder design, material, and slicer settings all matter.
Why is my 3D printer leaving strings?
Stringing—also called oozing or “hairy prints”—is the thin plastic strands left between separate parts of a print. It happens when filament continues to flow from the nozzle while the print head travels. Retraction pulls filament back during travel and feeds it forward before extrusion resumes, reducing that flow. (See Prusa’s guide to stringing and oozing.)
Retraction is a common cause, but not the only one. Excessive nozzle temperature, wet filament, residue on the nozzle, or a hotend issue can also contribute. Changing retraction alone will not correct every cause.
How do I stop stringing? Start with a known-good profile
Choose the profile for your actual printer, extruder arrangement, nozzle, and filament. If you have changed settings, return to the printer or filament manufacturer’s profile as a baseline; Prusa recommends factory presets when users are not intentionally configuring a custom setup. A profile for a different machine or material may produce misleading results.

How to tune retraction length and speed
Retraction length is how much filament is pulled back when retraction is triggered. Retraction speed is how quickly that pull occurs. In PrusaSlicer, the controls are under Printer Settings → Extruder 1; other slicers may use different labels or locations.
- Keep the same filament, nozzle temperature, and other print conditions for each test.
- Print a repeatable retraction test model so you can compare the same travel pattern each time.
- Change one setting—length or speed—then print again. Record the value and result before changing another variable.
- Keep the setting that reduces strings without causing unreliable extrusion. If the extruder skips, grinds filament, or extrusion becomes inconsistent, undo the last increase.
Use your machine’s profile rather than copying a number from another printer. Prusa states a maximum retraction length of 2 mm for its MK2.5/S and MK3/S/+ machines, while its Bowden MINI/MINI+ presets use 3.2 mm. An UltiMaker educational article gives 4.50 mm length and 25 mm/s speed as an example in its own equipment context, not as a universal recommendation. The differences illustrate why a value that works on one configuration may not work on another. (See Prusa’s settings guidance and UltiMaker’s stringing guide.)

Too much retraction length can strip filament or lead to inconsistent extrusion. Too much speed can grind filament or make the extruder skip steps. UltiMaker also recommends using a retraction test to find a balance between fewer strings and reliable extrusion.
Which travel and retraction options should I check?
These are PrusaSlicer options described in Prusa’s workflow; other slicers may name them differently or use different defaults. Adjust them only after establishing a reliable profile and test.

- Z lift: Lowering it can reduce stringing. Disabling it may increase the chance that the nozzle hits the printed part.
- Minimum travel distance for retraction: Raising this threshold can reduce print time, but may increase oozing because fewer short moves trigger retraction. Prusa says its PrusaSlicer preset uses 1 mm.
- Retract on layer change and Wipe while retracting: Prusa recommends leaving these enabled unless a specific issue calls for a controlled change.
- Only retract when crossing perimeters and Avoid crossing perimeters: These options change whether travel crosses visible walls and where oozing may appear. They do not fix wet filament or a hardware fault.
Can lowering nozzle temperature reduce oozing?
Yes, if the current temperature is higher than the filament needs. Prusa suggests trying a 5–10°C reduction as troubleshooting guidance, then checking the print. Make the change from the material’s recommended profile and assess extrusion and layer bonding as well as stringing; lowering temperature is not automatically better. Prusa’s PETG guidance also describes lower nozzle temperature and higher retraction as ways to moderate stringing, while recommending the appropriate material profile. (See Prusa’s stringing guide and Prusa’s PETG guide.)
Could wet filament be causing the strings?
Yes. Filament can absorb moisture, which may be released in the toolhead and contribute to stringing. Moisture is worth investigating when stringing persists despite reasonable settings or appears alongside other surface-quality problems. Prusa says polyamide, PVA, and TPU more often need drying than common PLA. Compare with a known-dry spool if available, or dry the filament according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Drying temperature and time vary by material, and the spool itself must tolerate the chosen method. (See Prusa’s filament-drying guidance.)

What if I print PETG or flexible filament?
PETG
PETG is prone to stringing. Start from the printer’s PETG profile, then test changes to retraction and temperature rather than importing PLA settings.
Flexible filament
Flexible filament can stretch during retraction, so it may need different settings from rigid filament. Prusa’s flexible-material guidance advises trying lower retraction or disabling it, then increasing gradually if needed. Keep the material dry and follow the profile for the specific printer and filament; flexible filaments are not all identical. (See Prusa’s flexible-material guidance.)

When should I check the nozzle or hotend?
If tuning and filament checks do not explain the problem, inspect for material residue on the nozzle; residue can catch strands. Prusa also identifies heat-dissipation problems and incorrect assembly after component changes as possible contributors. Clean or service the hotend using instructions for your specific printer and hotend rather than a generic reassembly procedure. (See Prusa’s troubleshooting guidance.)
What if only a few fine strings remain?
Brief heat treatment can remove residual strings from an otherwise sound print, but treat it as cosmetic cleanup, not a fix for the underlying cause. Prusa advises aiming a heat gun for only one or two seconds; longer exposure can deform the part. Skip this if the print is heat-sensitive or you cannot control the exposure.
