Unfold your phone and open the first app, then use the taskbar, an app panel, or the recent-apps screen to place a second app beside it. The exact steps depend on the model: Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold use different controls, so follow the matching guide below.
Google Pixel Fold: open two apps side by side
Use the taskbar
- Unfold the phone and open the first app.
- Slowly swipe up from the bottom edge to show the taskbar.
- Drag the second app from the taskbar to the left or right side of the screen.

Use Overview or Home
- To open Overview, swipe up from the bottom and hold.
- Tap Split, then select the second app from your open tasks or the taskbar.
- Alternatively, from Home or All apps, long-press an app, tap Split, and select the other app.
Resize, close, or save the pair
- Drag the center divider to adjust the apps’ relative sizes. Drag it to either side to close split screen and leave one app visible.
- Swiping up to Home also exits split screen.
- To save the combination, open Overview and tap Save app pair below the focus tile. The saved pair can be launched from Home and moved to the taskbar.
Google says the paired apps can continue to be used when the phone is folded.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold: open two apps together
Use the Edge panel
- Unfold the phone and open the Edge panel by swiping left from its handle on the right side.
- Tap All apps, then drag an app to the left, right, top, or bottom area of the unfolded display.
- Choose another app for the remaining area.
Use Recents
- Open Recents and tap the icon above the first app’s preview.
- Choose Open in split screen view.
- Select the second app.
Samsung also documents launching Multi window from the Taskbar, dragging URLs or hyperlinks, notifications, and gestures. Available options can depend on the model and software. See Samsung’s guide to Multi window and App pairs.

Resize, save, or leave split screen
- Drag the divider between the windows to change their sizes.
- To save the combination, tap the dotted divider, tap the App pair star, and choose a destination if prompted.
- Press Home to leave the split view; the apps remain together in Recents.
Optional gesture on One UI 6 or later
Open Settings > Advanced features > Multi window and enable Swipe for split screen. A two-finger swipe up from the bottom then moves the current app into split screen. Samsung notes that menus and settings may vary by provider, software version, and model.

What differs between Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold?

Compatibility and common mix-ups
- Not every app supports split screen. If an app is missing from the selection menu or will not open beside another app, it may not support the feature.
- Controls vary. Samsung says screens and settings can differ by wireless provider, software version, and device model. Google documents Pixel Fold steps, but menus may not look identical across software versions; Google’s general Pixel instructions note that some steps require Android 14 or later. - Do not assume three-app split screen. Samsung documents three-app App pairs only for specified Z Fold models; Google’s Pixel Fold instructions describe a two-app workflow.
- Split screen is not the same as other window modes. Pop-up view, picture-in-picture, and Flex mode are separate features with different controls and app support.
