The Crucial X10 is a tiny portable SSD with capacities up to 8TB, an IP65 dust- and water-resistance rating, and strong short-transfer performance. Crucial advertises sequential reads of up to 2,100MB/s, but that is a maximum measured on a high-performance desktop—not a speed every computer or long transfer will reach. The key buying checks are whether your computer has a 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 port and whether your work involves sustained, very large writes.

Crucial X10 review: the verdict

The X10 is compelling when you want a small, high-capacity drive for everyday file movement, game libraries, or photo and video storage. Independent reviews found it fast in ordinary workloads and competitive with other 20Gbps drives. Its main limitation is that performance can drop sharply during a long continuous write after its fast cache fills. It also cannot deliver its advertised maximum on every USB-C port, and it lacks the hardware encryption TechRadar says is available on the X10 Pro.

PCWorld reviewer Jon L. Jacobi summed up its everyday performance this way: “Performance-wise the X10 is about as good as it gets with normal amounts of data.” That assessment is about the review’s test context, not a promise of constant speed for every workload. PCWorld review, June 25, 2025.

How fast is the Crucial X10 in real use?

Short transfers and everyday workloads

The “up to 2,100MB/s” figure is Crucial’s maximum sequential-read result under a specified desktop benchmark. It is not a guaranteed copy speed, and it describes reads rather than every kind of file operation. Independent reviewers found the drive strong in synthetic and trace tests, and PCWorld praised its performance on ordinary-size workloads. Results vary with the computer, connection, files, and test conditions.

Long writes can slow after the cache fills

In Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 15-minute sequential-write test, the tested X10 held near 2,000MB/s for about six minutes and 40 seconds. It then dropped to roughly 200–300MB/s for the remainder of that test. Tom’s Hardware said writes under about 1TB remained solid in its test context; this is a review result, not a threshold guaranteed for every drive or computer. PCWorld also reported a comparatively weak 450GB write result versus the X10 Pro. These findings matter most when you regularly write hundreds of gigabytes at a time; they should not be confused with the X10’s peak read claim. Tom’s Hardware review (2025); PCWorld review (June 25, 2025).

Check your port before buying for speed

The X10 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, a 20Gbps interface. A USB-C-shaped connector alone does not establish that a computer supports Gen 2×2. Many newer computers instead offer USB4 or Thunderbolt 4, and Tom’s Hardware notes that these ports have become more common than Gen 2×2. The X10 is not a USB4 drive: do not assume that plugging it into a USB4 or Thunderbolt port makes the drive itself operate at USB4 speeds. Check the computer’s technical specifications for explicit USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 support and confirm the connection path you intend to use. Tom’s Hardware review (2025); Windows Central review (2025).

Is the Crucial X10 rugged or waterproof?

Crucial specifies IP65 dust and water resistance and drop resistance up to 3 meters (9.8 feet). Treat those as the manufacturer’s published protection ratings, not a claim that the drive is waterproof or immune to damage. Windows Central’s reviewer observed superficial scratches on the enclosure; that is an individual review observation, not a laboratory durability test. Which X10 capacity should you choose?

Crucial lists five options from 1TB through 8TB. Choose based on the amount of data you expect to keep on the drive and how much room you want for growth: 1TB or 2TB may suit a smaller working library, while 4TB, 6TB, or 8TB gives more room for large media collections and game libraries. Those are planning suggestions, not a claim that one capacity has different speed or protection characteristics. Crucial X10 vs. X10 Pro and other alternatives

The X10 Pro is worth comparing if hardware encryption is a requirement or if your write workload is a concern: TechRadar reports that the X10 lacks the hardware-encryption feature it attributes to the Pro, and PCWorld found the X10’s 450GB write result comparatively weak against it. Confirm the specific security feature and performance you need from the model’s current documentation before purchase. TechRadar review (2025); PCWorld review (June 25, 2025).

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Tom’s Hardware discusses the Lexar Professional SL600 and Corsair EX400U as alternatives, while Windows Central lists the Samsung T7, describing a slower speed ceiling and metal case in its review context. These are comparison leads rather than universal recommendations: compare interface, capacity, large-write behavior, dimensions, protection, and encryption against your own needs, then check current pricing and availability. Tom’s Hardware review (2025); Windows Central review (2025).

Who should buy the Crucial X10?

  • Consider it if you want pocketable storage, need a capacity up to 8TB, and mostly handle everyday transfers or reads.
  • Check the host first if peak speed is important; your computer needs a compatible 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 connection to match the drive’s interface.
  • Compare other drives if your computer is centered on USB4 or Thunderbolt and you want the highest performance those hosts can provide.
  • Look beyond the X10 if hardware encryption is mandatory or you frequently write very large files in one session.
