For hands-on programming and robotics projects built around Roomba technology, iRobot Create 2 is the clearest starting point in the documented options: it is a programmable robot based on a Roomba 600 Series platform, with a serial connection, onboard sensors, and support for added electronics. If you want a newer educational platform with official ROS 2 materials, consider Create 3 instead. Neither should be confused with an ordinary consumer Roomba, which is not established here as offering the same development interface.
Choose the right robot base
| Platform | Documented project scope | Programming path | Expansion and parts | Availability and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iRobot Create 2 | Movement, sounds, LED display, onboard sensor readings, camera-bot builds, and replacing the storage bin with another attachment. iRobot’s launch examples included a Bluetooth-controlled music robot and a light-painting robot. | Serial commands through the Open Interface; a documented Scratch extension uses legacy Flash and a browser plugin; a community ROS driver supports Create 1 and Create 2. | Designed to accept computers or microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators. iRobot documents printable parts; the product page also identifies compatibility with Roomba 600 Series accessories. | iRobot’s Canada product page says it is available at select retailers, which does not establish present stock. Current price and total build cost are not stated. |
| iRobot Create 3 | Official examples cover simple behavior, sound, movement, multi-robot exploration, navigation, mapping, and telepresence. | Official ROS 2 API and getting-started documentation. | Official mechanical documentation includes printable parts and mounting solutions. | Current retail availability and price are not established by the cited documentation. |
The documentation describes different project environments, not a controlled performance comparison. Check current retailer listings and the parts list for your intended build before choosing.
What you can build with Create 2
Program movement, sounds, and lights
Create 2 accepts commands over its serial connection and exposes preprogrammed behaviors through Open Interface Commands. Projects can combine movement with sounds and the robot’s LED display, while onboard sensors provide readings that can inform a program’s behavior. These are the documented platform capabilities; the exact behavior depends on the commands and added code used in a project. See iRobot’s Create 2 product information.
Add electronics or change the payload
iRobot describes adding a computer or microcontroller along with sensors and actuators. That makes projects such as a camera bot or a replacement for the storage-bin area possible in principle, but the sources do not establish a universal computer-board configuration. Confirm electrical, mechanical, and software compatibility for the particular build rather than assuming a given board will work.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Try a music or light-painting concept
When it announced Create 2 on Dec. 10, 2014, iRobot highlighted “DJ Create 2,” a roaming robot with Bluetooth-enabled mobile music control, and “LightBot,” which used lights to create images. The announcement also described printable files for parts such as a cargo tray that replaces the bin. These are historical examples, not confirmation that every original file or associated service remains maintained. A 3D printer was not included with the robot.
Choose a programming route
Scratch: a documented but legacy setup
The iRobot STEM Scratch Create 2 guide calls for the robot and its communication cable, as well as Adobe Flash, 32-bit Firefox ESR, and a Scratch browser plugin. Because this setup depends on legacy browser technology, its instructions may not work with current browsers or operating systems. Treat it as a historical route to investigate, not a frictionless current installation. The requirements are listed in the Scratch Create 2 extension guide.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
ROS: a community-maintained driver for Create 1 and 2
The AutonomyLab create_robot repository documents a ROS driver, a serial-port connection, and a Create 2 launch configuration. It is a community project rather than iRobot’s official product documentation, so check the repository’s current setup instructions and compatibility before building around it.
ROS 2: the documented Create 3 path
Create 3 has official ROS 2 documentation, including a documentation hub and examples that progress from basic movement and sound to navigation, mapping, multi-robot exploration, and telepresence. Pick it if those materials and ROS 2 are a better fit for your project; it is a separate educational platform, not an upgrade kit for a consumer Roomba.

Plan the physical build and supplies
- Robot base: Create 2 is the purpose-built Roomba-derived platform covered by the cited product information. Create 3 is a distinct educational option.
- Computer or microcontroller: Create 2 documentation supports adding one, but does not specify one universal board or configuration. Select hardware against the particular project’s interface and power requirements.
- Connection: The Scratch guide requires a communication cable, and the ROS driver describes a serial-port connection. Confirm that the cable and computer interface match the chosen software route.
- Printed parts: Create 2’s launch announcement and Create 3’s mechanical documentation describe printable parts. Check each file, mounting arrangement, and printer settings for the build; a printer and filament are separate supplies.
- Accessories: iRobot’s Create 2 product page names Roomba 600 Series batteries, Home Base, remote control, and Virtual Wall as compatible accessories. Verify the specific item and condition before purchase.
Availability and limits to check
The cited Create 2 product page is regional (iRobot Canada) and says the robot is available at select retailers; it does not confirm current stock. The Create 3 documentation explains its capabilities but does not establish current retail availability. No current price or controlled comparison of the two platforms is established here, so check listings for your region and calculate the complete cost of the robot, connection hardware, electronics, and any printed parts before committing.
For a brief historical note, iRobot chairman and CEO Colin Angle said in the Dec. 10, 2014 announcement that the company’s aim was to encourage students’ interest in STEM careers through robots. That statement describes the company’s motivation, not measured educational outcomes.
