Developers can learn without treating every new framework or AI tool as a career emergency. In a GitHub Blog interview published August 26, 2025, CodeTV creator Jason Lengstorf argues for learning from curiosity and enjoyment—and for keeping enough technical understanding to judge and debug AI-generated code. His comments are a perspective, not proof that one learning approach works for everyone.
Why Lengstorf says learning should feel less like a scramble
Andrea Griffiths frames the problem as a familiar late-night anxiety: trying to master a framework because it feels as if a job might depend on it. Lengstorf says developers can lose sight of the enjoyment that drew them to the work in the first place. He describes his motivation this way:
“It feels like we’re scrambling to learn whatever thing we’re worried is gonna cost us our job if we don’t learn it really fast. A huge motivation for me is to try to remind everybody that this stuff can be fun. And having fun isn’t not working.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
The practical distinction is between exploring a subject because it interests you and cramming because you fear being left behind. Lengstorf argues that enjoyment helps people retain what they learn and carry projects through to completion. The interview does not cite controlled evidence for those outcomes, so take this as his advice rather than a universal learning rule. Read Griffiths’s interview on the GitHub Blog.

AI can speed up coding, but it cannot replace understanding
Lengstorf’s message about AI is not that developers should avoid generated code. It is that speed is most useful when a developer can assess what the code is doing, recognize when something is wrong, and debug the surrounding system.
“If you’re a skilled developer, this is gonna make you unbelievably fast. If you are not a skilled developer, it’s gonna give you a lot of tools to learn very quickly. If you have no interest in learning, it is going to get you into a big bad mess really, really fast.”

Griffiths illustrates the point with a CodeTV live-build anecdote involving Jack Harrington. A missing component name in a configuration file led to a bug; Harrington spotted and fixed it quickly because he knew the system. That example shows how familiarity can help diagnose a problem, but it is an anecdote—not a controlled comparison of developers using AI.

For a learner, the useful approach is to treat generated code as something to inspect, not just accept. Understanding the framework, configuration, and data flow gives you a way to check whether a suggestion fits the project and to investigate failures when it does not.

Open-source dependencies have maintainers behind them
Software often depends on projects whose maintainers receive less attention than the tools built on top of them. Lengstorf urges developers to notice that dependence and support critical projects when they can. Griffiths names SQLite, the global timezone database, and Zod as examples of important infrastructure.
Zod is a TypeScript schema validation library. The article says Lengstorf supports it through GitHub Sponsors because he considers it load-bearing for his work. Its broader point is that a dependency is not simply an abstract package: people must maintain it, and users can look for appropriate ways to recognize or support that work. The interview’s specific maintainer-count claims are not independently attributed there, so they should not be treated as current verified statistics.

His predictions about the web are possibilities, not settled outcomes
Lengstorf describes the JavaScript ecosystem as being in a “temporary lull” that could precede a more interesting period. He points to continuing changes in browser and CSS capabilities, and speculates that AI-mediated interactions might reduce the need for some complex navigation patterns. He also raises the possibility that websites may need to accommodate agents acting on parts of a site.
These are his predictions, not confirmed directions for the whole web. The interview explicitly does not argue that every interface should become a chat interface; different tasks still call for different kinds of interaction.

Where to explore these ideas further
Griffiths mentions Learn with Jason and CodeTV as developer-learning projects. They are examples of hands-on learning resources, not endorsements of a particular product or a guarantee about current programming or availability. For maintainers, GitHub Sponsors is the support mechanism discussed in connection with Lengstorf’s support for Zod.
