Store your Zcash recovery phrase offline, privately, and in a place only you can access. Never enter it into a website, send it in a message, email it, or save it in a screenshot or cloud note. Just as important, follow the backup and restore instructions for the wallet you actually use: Zcash wallets do not all handle recovery phrases and key exports the same way.
What a Zcash recovery phrase protects
A wallet holds keys that control your ZEC. In a hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet, a seed can derive multiple addresses, so restoring the seed may be necessary to regain access to addresses generated after the original backup. Zcash’s ZIP 32 standard requires a seed generated for Zcash purposes to contain at least 256 bits of entropy. ZIP 315 says a 24-word BIP 39 mnemonic is needed when generating a phrase to meet that requirement. These technical rules do not mean that every wallet phrase is interchangeable: use the format and recovery process specified by your wallet.

How to store a Zcash recovery phrase safely
- Make the backup using the wallet’s own instructions. Record the phrase or backup exactly as directed, and check that you can read it correctly. Do not assume that a phrase from one wallet can restore another.
- Keep the backup offline. Use a physical record in a private, access-controlled place. A metal seed phrase backup plate is one possible way to make an offline record, but no specific plate is established here as tested or endorsed for resistance to fire, water, or theft.
- Keep it secret. Do not share the phrase with anyone, including someone claiming to be wallet support. Do not paste it into a website or support form, or put it in email, chat, a screenshot, or a cloud note. A person who obtains the seed may be able to derive the wallet’s keys and control its funds. Trezor’s recovery-card instructions warn: “Never share your wallet backup anywhere, especially online!”
- Protect the physical location. Store the backup where other people cannot casually find, photograph, or remove it. Consider what happens if you lose access to that location, while avoiding exposed copies that make theft easier.
- Keep recovery instructions separate from the secret. Note enough to identify the wallet and its recovery setup, but do not store that identifying information beside the phrase in an exposed place. Wallet-specific restore differences make those instructions useful; they are not a reason to disclose the seed.
These practices protect the recovery phrase itself. They do not replace security for the device and wallet data that may also be needed to restore access.

Back up and restore according to your wallet
Recovery behavior depends on the wallet implementation. The Zcash documentation’s backup instructions apply specifically to zcashd; users of other wallets should follow those wallets’ current guides or support channels. Do not treat a private-key export as automatically equivalent to a full wallet backup.
For zcashd
The Zcash wallet backup instructions describe backing up the whole wallet.dat, exporting private keys for addresses, or exporting a single private key. The documentation calls backing up the whole wallet the easiest option. A backup made before new addresses are generated may not reflect those addresses; its instructions explain that HD Sapling addresses can be regenerated in sequence from a wallet backup, followed by a rescan.

The same documentation says z_importwallet imports exported keys but does not currently import HD seeds. Imported Sapling addresses are treated as standard non-HD keys. For a full restore that includes the Sapling HD seed, the documentation points to the whole-wallet backup method. Therefore, a key-export file should not be assumed to restore the complete HD wallet state.

Use that wallet’s official backup and restore guide, including its supported seed format and derivation or setup details. Before relying on a backup, confirm that its documented restore procedure covers the wallet features and addresses you use. Do not test recovery by entering a phrase into an unfamiliar website or app; use the wallet’s documented process.

Protect wallet data on the device too
A written phrase and the wallet files on a computer are separate security concerns. Zcash’s Privacy Recommendations and Best Practices state that wallet encryption in zcashd is disabled and recommend full-disk or home-directory encryption, regular backups, and controlled access to the machine and wallet environment. This guidance is specific to zcashd; consult the security instructions for another wallet app rather than assuming the same settings apply.
Choose a wallet with both privacy and recoverability in mind
Zcash resources describe hardware, mobile, and desktop wallet categories. The Zcash Foundation advises people seeking transaction confidentiality to choose a wallet that is shielded by default. That is a transaction-privacy feature, not protection against someone stealing or learning your recovery phrase.

- Which seed format and derivation or setup the wallet supports.
- Whether a hardware wallet supports the specific Zcash features you need, rather than merely appearing in a general ecosystem listing.
- Whether you can make and securely maintain an offline backup using the wallet’s instructions.
The Zcash ecosystem listing describes Zodl (formerly Zashi) as self-custodial and says it has Keystone hardware-wallet integration. A separate ecosystem listing names Trezor, but a listing alone does not establish current model-specific support for shielded transactions or recovery compatibility. Verify the current official wallet and device documentation before choosing a particular model or assuming a recovery method will work.
