Choose greenhouse emergency supplies around the systems that could fail and the crops at risk—not from a one-size-fits-all shopping list. For a power outage, inventory the equipment that must keep running, then select a generator and connection plan that can handle those loads starting up together. Add temperature alerts, crop-appropriate frost protection, film-repair materials, and a written response plan for the weather and structure you actually have.

Start with the failures your greenhouse must withstand

A greenhouse can become vulnerable when power, heat, ventilation, irrigation, or structural protection is lost. The critical failure changes with season and crop: a winter outage may disable heat and controls, while a warm-weather outage may stop fans, inflation of double-layer film, and water systems. UF/IFAS Extension notes that most greenhouses require fans, water pumps, and heating equipment for operation (Auxiliary Power Units For Greenhouse Operations).

Make an inventory before buying backup equipment. List each load, its nameplate voltage, phase, running current, and motor horsepower. Record which loads are essential, which can wait, and which must operate at the same time. Include control systems and alarms as well as heaters, fans, and pumps. The needs of a hobby greenhouse are not interchangeable with those of a commercial facility, a well pump, or a system with three-phase equipment.

Choose backup power by the loads it must serve

Match the generator to running and startup demand

A standby generator can support essential greenhouse equipment when utility power fails, but no generic generator capacity is safe to recommend for every greenhouse. Motor startup can require substantially more current than steady operation: UF/IFAS says starting amperage may be two to seven times running amperage. Treat that as a sizing caution, not a substitute for the motor and generator manufacturers’ specifications.

Determine which equipment must run simultaneously, and have the actual combination evaluated against nameplate data and manufacturer requirements. UF/IFAS recommends starting the largest or most heavily loaded motor first. A generator listing’s headline wattage by itself does not establish that it can start and operate your greenhouse loads.

Plan the connection, fuel, and operation

A standby arrangement includes both a generator and transfer switch. Generator connection and transfer equipment must be installed appropriately for the equipment and applicable electrical rules; consult a qualified electrician. Generator placement, exhaust, fuel type and supply, replenishment, maintenance, and who will start and monitor the system also belong in the plan. Keep fuel available and check generator condition and battery as part of routine readiness.

Add temperature alarms as an early-warning layer

A battery-powered greenhouse temperature alarm can alert you when temperatures move outside a chosen range or heating fails. UGA Cooperative Extension describes a warning device as useful insurance and notes battery-powered alarms as one option (Greenhouses: Heating, Cooling and Ventilation). An alarm gives you time to respond; it does not produce heat or restore power.

When comparing alarms, check whether they sound locally or send a remote alert, whether they have battery backup, whether their temperature range fits the greenhouse, and whether you can test them where they will be used. Set thresholds around the crop and operating plan rather than assuming one temperature suits every greenhouse.

Prepare for freezing conditions

Keep crop-appropriate frost-protection fabric or covers available and use them only where suitable for the crop and greenhouse structure. Covers are not a replacement for a tested heating contingency when a crop requires heat; no particular cover rating or performance level is established here.

Keep covering and drainage ready for storms

Inspect greenhouse covering and repair tears; UF/IFAS’s heating checklist also recommends keeping replacement polytube available. Use repair tape or patch materials compatible with the covering and its manufacturer’s guidance. A patch is a temporary repair, not proof that the structure is secure in high winds.

For storm readiness, secure frames and coverings, clear drainage, protect crops, and prepare backup generation for ventilation, cooling, and irrigation needs. UConn Extension’s greenhouse weather guidance covers these precautions (Prepare Your Greenhouses for Weather Events). If a structure or covering needs a proper repair or replacement, do not treat tape as a structural fix.

Consider backup heat and emergency service

Possible contingencies include redundant installed heat, suitable portable space heaters, or arranging access to emergency heating equipment. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s greenhouse best-management-practices guide gives rental equipment as an example of a backup approach (Best Management Practices for Energy, Water & Waste in Alberta Greenhouses: E – Back-up Systems).

Any portable heater must be suitable for the greenhouse environment and installed and operated safely. Do not use combustion equipment without appropriate exhaust and safety controls. UF/IFAS notes that greenhouse heating systems must avoid harmful fumes; electrical work must also meet applicable local requirements.

Use a seasonal checklist and test the plan

UConn Extension recommends identifying vulnerable systems, keeping backup equipment ready, and maintaining it; its general extreme-weather guidance also recommends checking backup-system functionality seasonally (Preparing Farm Operations for Extreme Weather: General Strategies for Producers). Keep written outage procedures accessible to anyone who may need to respond.
