Use ICANN’s Registration Data Lookup Tool to check a domain’s public registration record, identify its registrar, and look for a listed expiration date. The record may not disclose the registrant’s identity, so a lookup cannot always tell you who legally owns or controls the domain.

Check a domain’s registration record

  1. Open ICANN’s Registration Data Lookup Tool and enter the domain name. ICANN says the public tool queries current registration data from registries and registrars in real time using RDAP. If information for a domain is unavailable through RDAP, the tool may fall back to the relevant generic top-level domain (gTLD) registry’s WHOIS service. (ICANN Lookup)

  2. Find the registrar field. This names the service provider through which the domain is registered and managed; it does not identify the person or organization that registered it.

  3. Review the registrant and contact fields. If they are redacted, withheld, or missing, the public result has not established the registrant’s identity. What appears can vary by the domain’s registry, registrar, applicable rules, and the information returned for that lookup. (ICANN Lookup FAQ)

  4. Open or locate the Dates section and look for an expiration date. Creation and last-updated dates may also appear. These dates are supplied by the registrar, and not every result necessarily shows every date. (ICANN Lookup FAQ)

Understand what the result does—and does not—tell you

Registrant and registrar are different

The registrant is the individual or entity that registers the domain. The registrar is the service provider the registrant uses to register and manage it. In everyday language people may ask who “owns” a domain, but the more precise lookup question is who is listed as its registrant. (ICANN: Information for Domain Name Registrants)

A public listing may not reveal a person’s identity

Registration records can include public registrant information, but some details may not be returned in a public lookup. A redacted or absent name is not proof that the domain has no registrant; it means the public result does not show that identity. ICANN’s FAQ describes variation in the data returned. An expiration date is not an availability date

The date shown is a registration-record date. It does not by itself establish when, or whether, the domain will become available for someone else to register. Do not treat a listed expiration date as a reliable acquisition date.

Why ICANN Lookup uses RDAP

For gTLD registration information, ICANN made RDAP the definitive source in place of sunsetted WHOIS services effective 28 January 2025. The lookup tool uses RDAP and may use the registry WHOIS fallback described above when queried information is unavailable through RDAP. This guidance is specifically about gTLDs; country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) may have different data availability or lookup services. (ICANN update on launching RDAP and sunsetting WHOIS)

If the registrant’s details are not public

Start with the public lookup result. If you have a legitimate need for nonpublic gTLD registration data, ICANN points to its Registration Data Request Service (RDRS) for participating registrars, or to contacting the domain’s sponsoring registrar about its disclosure process. A request route does not guarantee that personal details will be disclosed. (ICANN Registration Data Request Service; ICANN RDAP announcement)
