To join a prison or jail video visit, start with the facility’s official visitation page. The usual sequence is to get visitor approval if required, register with the facility’s video provider, book an available slot, pay any fee, then join using the approved device or app. The facility sets the rules: approval, visit format, price, duration, booking window, participant limits and supported technology can all vary.

How to arrange and join a video visit

Use the facility’s instructions for the specific institution where the incarcerated person is housed. A “video visit” may mean a call from home, a visit at a visitor-center station, or a mix of formats. California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), for example, distinguishes internet visits from face-to-face visits and notes that institutions offer different options. CDCR visiting information

  1. Find the facility’s visitation page and provider. Confirm the institution, visit format, current scheduling portal and support contact. Do not assume a provider or app used at another prison or jail will work here.
  2. Apply for visitor approval if required. Some facilities require approval before you can schedule. CDCR uses a visitor questionnaire and reviews applications; processing times vary by institution. Michigan says a ViaPath appointment booked before MDOC approval will not be honored. 3. Create the correct provider account. Follow the facility’s registration instructions, including any requirement that account details or email addresses match across services. In Indiana’s described ViaPath flow, visitors register online, obtain facility approval, use GettingOut Visits on iOS or Android, and add the incarcerated person. The portal says that in this workflow the incarcerated person initiates the remote visit; this is not a universal arrangement. Indiana ViaPath visitor portal
  4. Choose an available appointment and the required attendees. Select the approved person, add any other approved participants, then choose an open date, location and time. CDCR’s booking guide describes this sequence and says the reservation produces a confirmation number and email. Save both and check the appointment time and any listed time zone. CDCR scheduling guide
  5. Pay if the facility requires payment. Check the amount, accepted payment method and refund policy before confirming. Some visits are free; others must be paid for in advance.
  6. Open the facility-approved app or desktop tool. Follow the portal’s device-specific directions rather than installing a similarly named app from a different provider. Indiana’s ViaPath portal, for example, directs desktop and laptop visitors to GTL VisBridge and mobile visitors to GTL VisMobile, while its separate GettingOut instructions describe a mobile workflow. Indiana ViaPath device instructions
  7. Log in early and follow the visit rules. Use the facility’s stated lead time, have the approved participants ready, and follow the rules on conduct, clothing, children and devices. The scheduled slot may be treated as fixed, and arriving late may mean losing the visit.

What to check before booking

  • Whether you are approved and listed for this incarcerated person.
  • The correct portal, account login and email address; whether a separate provider account is needed.
  • The visit format: home internet, visitor-center station, or both.
  • Available dates, the appointment time and time zone, booking window, duration and monthly limit.
  • Who may attend, whether every participant must be preregistered, and any age or guardian requirements.
  • Any fee, payment deadline and late-arrival or cancellation policy.
  • The facility’s supported phone, tablet or computer software. As sensible preparation, check that your device’s camera and microphone work and that your internet connection is stable; these are not evidence of a universal equipment requirement.
  • The local rules for dress, behavior, other people or electronics in the room, and how early to log in.

Fees, length and visit limits depend on the facility

There is no single nationwide price, visit length or monthly quota. The following official examples illustrate how policies differ; they should not be treated as rates or rules for another facility.

Facility and source date Published example
CDCR, scheduling guide accessed 2026 States that incarcerated people receive one free video visit per month. CDCR scheduling guide
Michigan DOC, page updated May 15, 2025 A scheduled 20-minute video visit costs $3.20, paid in advance by the visitor. The page says visits may be booked no more than seven days ahead and not later than 48 hours before the slot. Confirm the current policy on the facility page. Michigan video visiting
Michigan DOC, 2025 visiting standards Sets maximum monthly video visit counts by custody or placement: five for Level I, four for Level II, three for Level IV general population and protection, two for Level V and STG I, and one for segregation and STG II. The standards also say visits are up to 20 minutes, appointment-only and paid by the visitor through ViaPath. Michigan visiting standards

Using a phone, tablet or computer

You may be able to use a phone, but compatibility depends on the facility’s provider and instructions. The Indiana ViaPath portal illustrates why checking matters: it directs desktop or laptop users to GTL VisBridge, while mobile instructions refer to GTL VisMobile or GettingOut Visits. Its desktop directions also say to run the Internet Visit Tester at least 10 minutes before the visit and follow its prompts. Those instructions apply to the portal’s described workflow, not to every facility. Indiana ViaPath portal

Do not buy a webcam or other accessory based on a general assumption that it is required. First check whether the facility supports your chosen device and whether its instructions call for extra equipment.

Rules for joining can be strict

Read the rules attached to your own facility’s portal. For one specific example, Virginia DOC rules effective March 1, 2025 require home-internet visitors to be logged into GTL 15 minutes before the visit. They limit a visit to five people, require all participants to be preregistered, require at least one adult who is the parent or guardian when minors participate, and prohibit joining while driving or using other technology in the room. Virginia also says the scheduled slot is exact and fees are not refunded for late arrivals or missed visits. These are Virginia-specific rules, not nationwide standards. Policies about monitoring, recording or data retention are not established by these examples as universal rules. Check the facility and provider policies if you need to know how a particular visit is handled.

If approval, booking or the connection fails

  • You cannot book: Check approval status, the approved visitor list and whether the account is connected to the correct incarcerated person. Contact the facility if the approval process or wait time is unclear.
  • No appointments appear: Review the facility’s booking window, quota, visit format and available locations. Some schedules or formats may differ by institution.
  • The app or device does not work: Return to the facility’s portal and confirm the approved app or desktop tool for your device. Use its troubleshooting or support contact; do not assume another provider’s app is compatible.
  • Payment or late-arrival terms are unclear: Check the current facility rules and provider payment instructions before booking. Ask the listed support contact about a charge or missed appointment rather than assuming a refund.
