The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is worth considering if you will regularly use its 7.6-inch inner screen for multitasking, reading, or work. Its split-screen tools, pop-up windows, and Taskbar make it more than a phone that happens to unfold—but at 263 g, it is also heavy, thick when folded, and built around an inner screen that needs more care than a conventional phone display. This review covers the 2022 model; current used-device prices, stock, and software availability vary by region and listing.

What makes the Galaxy Z Fold4 different?

The Fold4 works as a conventional, relatively narrow phone when closed and opens into a small tablet workspace. Samsung’s 2022 US unlocked specifications list a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main screen and a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover screen, each with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz. The phone measures 155.1 × 130.1 × 6.3 mm unfolded and 155.1 × 67.1 × 15.8–14.2 mm folded, and weighs 263 g. Samsung’s US specification sheet lists a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, 12 GB of RAM, and 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB storage options.

Is the Galaxy Z Fold4 good for multitasking?

Yes—multitasking is the Fold4’s strongest reason to choose it over a regular phone. Samsung launched the device with Android 12L and One UI 4.1.1, including a Taskbar intended to make switching between favorite and recent apps easier. Samsung described it as “a layout similar to your PC,” and added gestures for split-screen and pop-up windows, plus drag-and-drop support in select apps. Those features depend on app support; the large display does not mean every Android app is optimized for it. Samsung’s launch announcement outlines the software features.

How the multi-window tools work

  • Taskbar: Use the persistent app bar to switch between favorite and recent apps without returning to the home screen.
  • Split screen: Place compatible apps side by side or in a multi-window layout to refer to one while working in another.
  • Pop-up windows: Keep a compatible app in a floating window over another app.
  • Saved layouts: GSMArena’s 2023 long-term review reports that the Fold4 can save multi-window layouts for reuse.

Samsung’s commissioned productivity article says the Fold4 can run up to three apps at once in tablet or Flex Mode, with examples such as Meet alongside Notes or Outlook alongside PowerPoint. Treat the app combinations and three-app figure as Samsung’s stated capability, not a guarantee that every combination will suit every task. GSMArena’s long-term assessment also found the software a major strength, while noting duplicate Samsung and Google apps and occasional app-specific awkwardness. Samsung Insights’ productivity examples and GSMArena’s long-term review provide further detail.

Displays, handling, and everyday compromises

The inner display gives compatible apps room for side-by-side work and makes reading or viewing content feel closer to using a compact tablet. The cover display is narrower than a typical slab-phone screen, however, and the phone’s 263 g weight and folded thickness are noticeable trade-offs if you mostly use it closed. GSMArena’s long-term review also calls out the visible crease and hinge gap, as well as the tall, narrow proportions of the cover screen. These are documented design characteristics, not evidence that every device will develop a fault.

How durable is the Galaxy Z Fold4?

Samsung lists Armor Aluminum, Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the exterior surfaces, and an IPX8 water-resistance rating. IPX8 is not a dust-resistance rating. The Fold4 therefore should not be treated as dustproof, and its folding inner screen and hinge warrant more care than the exposed screen of a conventional phone. The Guardian’s 2022 review raised concerns about the inner screen’s vulnerability, weight, thickness, and repair expense; GSMArena’s 2023 review noted the crease and hinge gap. Those reviews identify trade-offs and risks, not a prediction that a particular unit will fail. The Guardian’s review discusses its handling and durability concerns.

Can you use an S Pen on the Galaxy Z Fold4?

Yes, on the main screen with a compatible S Pen Fold Edition or S Pen Pro. Samsung says both are sold separately; do not assume a generic Galaxy S Pen is compatible. The optional Standing Cover with Pen provides a way to store the stylus, but a case and pen are not standard inclusions implied by the phone’s specifications. Check the exact product listing for what is included. Samsung’s Fold4 specifications and accessory details describe the compatible pens, and Samsung’s launch announcement describes the optional cover.

How good are the cameras?

The rear camera system comprises a 50 MP main camera with optical image stabilization, a 12 MP ultrawide, and a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3× optical zoom and OIS. There is a 10 MP selfie camera on the cover screen and a 4 MP under-display camera on the inner screen. Samsung’s “30X Space Zoom” figure includes digital zoom; it is not 30× optical zoom. Samsung’s US specification sheet lists the camera hardware.

The Guardian’s reviewer considered the rear system a substantial improvement over the Fold3 and praised the main camera in varied lighting. The same reviewer judged the under-display selfie camera more suitable for video calls than still photography. That is an individual review assessment, not a promise of identical results in all conditions.

Battery, performance, and storage

Samsung lists a 4,400 mAh battery, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and 12 GB RAM for its US unlocked model. Storage configurations are 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish how long a particular used device’s battery will last, especially after years of use. When buying second-hand, assess the battery’s condition along with the screen and hinge.

Software updates in 2026

Update availability depends on the exact model, country, and carrier. Samsung’s firmware-history page for model SM-F936B displayed an Android 16 build dated May 2026 when accessed on October 4, 2026; that does not establish that the same build is available for every Fold4. Check Settings → Software update on the specific phone, and verify the model number and regional/carrier variant before buying. Samsung’s SM-F936B update history states that rollout details can vary by model, country, or carrier environment.

Is the Fold4 a worthwhile upgrade from the Fold3?

The Fold4 adds a newer chip and a stronger main camera, but it is an evolutionary generation rather than a fundamental redesign. GSMArena’s launch-era review characterized the changes as evolutionary. A Fold3 owner should weigh the improvements against the cost of switching and ask how often the larger screen and multitasking tools will be used; the case for upgrading is weaker if the phone is mainly used as a closed handset. GSMArena’s Fold4 review covers the generation’s changes.

Who should buy the Galaxy Z Fold4?

The Fold4 makes most sense for someone who values a large Samsung phone workspace and will use split-screen, floating windows, or tablet-style apps often enough to justify carrying a heavier, thicker device. It is a less compelling choice if you prioritize a light phone, dust resistance, carefree screen handling, or a conventional camera-and-app experience.

  • Consider it if: the inner display and multi-window workflow will be part of your regular work or daily use, and the device’s physical compromises are acceptable.
  • Look elsewhere if: you mostly use one app at a time, prefer a lighter phone, or are uncomfortable with foldable-screen and repair risks.
  • For used or refurbished listings: confirm the exact model, storage, carrier lock, regional variant, screen condition, hinge operation, and included accessories. Compare the asking price with other listings available in your region; launch pricing is not a reliable guide to today’s used-market value.

The Guardian’s 2022 reviewer concluded that most people would be better served by a conventional phone or a less costly option, while recognizing the Fold4’s appeal for users who want the largest Samsung phone workspace. That is a launch-era review judgment, not a current ranking of phones or prices.
