Start by confirming the interruption schedule and restoration plan with your local gas utility. Then prepare for any loss of gas-powered heat, hot water, or cooking—and do not turn a shutoff meter back on or relight appliances unless your utility specifically instructs you to do so.

Confirm what the utility plans to interrupt

Read the notice and contact the utility using the number or account details on it. Ask what service or appliances are affected, when the interruption is expected to begin and end, how updates will be shared, and how you will know service has been restored. The reviewed guidance from Enbridge Gas and National Grid describes different access and restoration practices; your local utility’s instructions govern.

  • Will all gas service be interrupted, or only service to particular equipment?
  • Does a technician need access to your home or meter? If so, when, and must an adult be present?
  • What should you do if nobody is home when restoration work is scheduled?
  • How will the utility provide schedule changes and confirm restoration?

Keep your utility account contact information current so you can receive updates. National Grid specifically asks its customers to keep the account phone number updated for outage communication; this is not a universal utility requirement.

Plan for heat, hot water, and cooking

Identify which household needs depend on gas and plan alternatives for the expected timing and conditions. If gas provides space heating, consider how you will keep household members and pets safe and whether you may need to stay elsewhere. Plan separately for hot water and cooking. Follow the instructions for any temporary heating or cooking equipment, and use it only in the manner and location its manufacturer and safety guidance allow.

Never use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home. Ready.gov warns that doing so can create carbon monoxide and fire hazards (Ready.gov power outage guidance).

Consider needs that may make an interruption harder to manage, such as medication, mobility or accessibility, infants, older adults, and pets. If your home cannot remain safe without gas service, arrange a suitable place to stay rather than relying on an unsafe heating or cooking method.

Gather practical supplies

Keep basic supplies accessible for the interruption. Enbridge’s emergency-kit guidance includes water, food, a flashlight, and batteries (Enbridge Gas emergency guidance). Add items based on your household’s needs and the utility’s expected schedule; there is no universal kit or duration established for planned gas work.

  • Water and ready-to-eat food, as appropriate for your household
  • A battery-operated flashlight and spare batteries
  • Any household-specific essentials you may need if the interruption lasts longer than expected

A carbon monoxide alarm is important in homes with fuel-burning appliances, but it does not detect a natural gas leak. Enbridge recommends CO alarms on every level of a home; do not treat an alarm as a substitute for recognizing and responding to a suspected gas leak.

Leave shutoff and restoration work to the utility

Do not shut off gas preemptively, operate a meter, or relight appliances unless your utility directs you to do so. Procedures vary by utility and installation. FEMA CERT training advises households to learn and label shutoff locations, but says not to attempt a shutoff if unsure of the safe procedure; it also says only a licensed technician should turn natural gas flow back on (FEMA CERT Basic Training).

Restoration may involve utility technicians checking the system, turning meters back on, inspecting appliances, or relighting pilots. National Grid describes a process involving meter shutoff, system safety checks before gas is reintroduced, and then meter and appliance restoration; it requires an adult over 18 to be present for its relight process. Enbridge also describes technicians entering homes and tells customers not to restore service or relight appliances themselves. These are examples of those utilities’ procedures, not universal rules.

PG&E says that after its gas service shutoff valve has been closed, a qualified professional should perform a safety check before service is restored and pilots are relit. It warns customers not to turn the gas back on themselves (PG&E gas outage guidance). That guidance does not mean every planned interruption requires the same visit. Follow the directions in your own utility notice, including any access or appointment requirements.

Respond immediately to a suspected gas leak

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the area and call emergency responders and your utility from a safe location. Do not use a phone, switch, flashlight, or other possible ignition source in the suspected leak area. PG&E advises avoiding ignition sources until you are at a safe distance; follow local emergency instructions.
