After a campus sexual assault report, a college may explain its options, offer supportive measures, and assess whether to use its grievance procedure. The steps vary by institution and case; making a report does not mean every student will go through the same formal investigation.
What happens after a college receives a report?
Information about alleged sexual harassment or sexual assault can reach a college from the student, a parent or other responsible person, an employee, or another source. The school’s response depends on the allegation, who reported it, the students’ ages, the institution’s structure, and other circumstances.
The school should explain relevant options and its responsibilities. A report may lead to a formal grievance process, but not every report results in an identical investigation. The college’s published policy describes how it handles reports and what steps may follow.
Can you get support without filing a formal complaint?
Yes. A Title IX coordinator should promptly discuss available supportive measures with the person who reported the conduct, whether or not that person files a formal complaint. The coordinator should also explain how to file one.

How does the campus grievance procedure work?
A grievance procedure is the institution’s internal process for addressing sex-discrimination complaints. The school’s rules should explain the procedures, provide for an adequate and impartial inquiry, allow the parties to present witnesses and other evidence, set reasonably prompt timeframes, and use trained employees.
For the actual stages, deadlines, contacts, evidence procedures, and any appeal provisions, consult the current policy of the college involved. Procedures differ among institutions, so a general description cannot establish what a particular school will do.

What does an investigator do?
An investigation should be prompt, impartial, and thorough. Investigators may gather accounts and relevant information, but the order and method of interviews and evidence collection vary. Schools do not all use the same process for sharing evidence or preparing investigative reports; the institution’s policy governs those details.
Students can ask the Title IX coordinator or investigator how to provide relevant information, identify witnesses, and learn what process applies. The policy should explain how the school handles those opportunities.

Could there be a hearing or decision?
A hearing or other decision-making step may follow under the applicable grievance procedure. The U.S. Department of Education says that, following a federal court’s January 9, 2025, vacatur of the 2024 Title IX Final Rule, the 2020 rule is again the basis for its Office for Civil Rights (OCR) enforcement.
Under the 2020 rule text for postsecondary institutions, a live hearing uses cross-examination conducted by party advisors. A decision-maker may not rely on a statement from a party or witness who does not submit to cross-examination. How a school implements the applicable requirements depends on its current policy; check that policy for hearing arrangements and other procedural details.

How is an OCR complaint different from a campus process?
A campus grievance process and a complaint to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights are separate routes. The campus process is handled under the institution’s policy. OCR handles federal civil-rights complaints and describes itself as a neutral fact-finder, not an advocate for either party.

OCR’s general filing deadline is 180 calendar days after the discrimination, according to the Department’s complaint-process guidance. Consult OCR’s current instructions to determine how its requirements apply to a particular situation.
