Yes. Equinix disclosed ransomware on some of its internal systems on September 9, 2020. The company said its data centers, managed services and customer operations remained operational; its announcement described an incident from 2020, not a newly reported 2026 attack.
What happened to Equinix?
On September 9, 2020, Equinix said it was investigating ransomware on some internal systems. The company said it took immediate action, notified law enforcement and began investigating with its teams. Its 2021 filing later described the incident as files being encrypted and held for ransom.
Equinix’s contemporaneous statement said: “Our data centers and our service offerings, including managed services, remain fully operational, and the incident has not affected our ability to support our customers.” This was the company’s description at the time, not an independent verification. Were Equinix data centers or customers affected?
Equinix said its internal systems were affected, but its data centers and customer-facing services continued operating. The company specifically said customer operations and data stored on customer equipment in its facilities were not affected.
