Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most small businesses, updated antivirus or anti-malware is still a baseline safeguard—not a complete security program. AI-enabled cybersecurity tools may add capabilities, but NIST and FTC guidance does not establish that AI endpoint products outperform traditional antivirus. Choose tools by what they do, how alerts are handled, and how well they fit your business’s risks and capacity—not by an “AI-powered” label alone.
What is the difference between AI cybersecurity tools and traditional antivirus?
Traditional antivirus and anti-malware software is designed to help protect devices from malicious software. AI-enabled cybersecurity products may include additional capabilities, but “AI-powered” is not a single, standardized protection level. The label alone does not tell you what threats a product detects, how it responds, or whether anyone is monitoring its alerts.
For a small business, the useful comparison is not simply “old technology versus new technology.” It is whether a tool covers the devices you use, stays current, fits your ability to administer it, and supports your wider security practices.
Is AI cybersecurity better than antivirus?
There is no basis in the reviewed official guidance for concluding that AI endpoint products outperform traditional antivirus in a head-to-head comparison. NIST’s AI-related quick-start guide is about using AI to analyze, plan, implement, and monitor Cybersecurity Framework outcomes; it is an initial public draft, not an evaluation of endpoint products or proof of AI superiority. See NIST’s CSF 2.0 Quick-Start Guides.
#1 Best Overall
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
That means a business should not assume AI guarantees prevention, makes antivirus obsolete, or automatically improves detection. Ask vendors to explain the product’s specific capabilities and limits, and assess them against your business’s needs. NIST’s Cybersecurity Basics and its Small Business Quick-Start Guide to the Cybersecurity Framework continue to support antivirus and anti-malware as part of small-business security.
What cybersecurity software does a small business need?
Start with the devices, data, services, obligations, and risks the business actually has. NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 organizes risk management under six functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. The FTC’s Cybersecurity for Small Business guidance translates this kind of risk management into practical controls.

- 24/7 BUSINESS TECH SUPPORT** Our tech experts are ready 24/7 to help with viruses, setup issues, or just getting things working right. (Available in English only)
- SMARTER FRAUD PROTECTION Get alerts when unusual financial activity or suspicious behavior is spotted on your business’s social accounts.
- DARK WEB MONITORING We monitor the dark web and notify you if your business information, like tax id, are not where they should be.
- SECURE VPN Private browsing for your business on any device—Windows, Mac, or mobile—so your team can work confidently from anywhere.
- FASTER, CLEANER, UP-TO-DATE PCs Boost productivity with regular cleanups, updates, and PC tune-ups to help your business run smoother.
- Endpoint protection: Install and maintain updated antivirus or anti-malware on business devices, and keep operating systems and applications patched.
- Account protection: Require multifactor authentication (MFA), especially phishing-resistant MFA where available. Use unique, strong passwords and consider a password manager.
- Backups: Back up important business data regularly, protect the copies, and test that you can restore from them. Consider keeping a backup copy disconnected from the network. An external hard drive can be one medium in a backup plan; it is not a complete backup strategy by itself.
- Access and people: Limit access to sensitive information to those who need it, train staff to recognize threats, and prepare response, recovery, and continuity plans.
- Email protection: If you use company-domain email, ask your email provider about configuring SPF, DKIM, and DMARC to reduce spoofing.
These controls address different risks. Antivirus does not replace MFA, patching, protected backups, staff training, or planning for an incident.
How should you compare antivirus and AI-enabled products?
Use the same practical questions for any product category. These are buying criteria derived from small-business risk-management guidance, not a ranking of product performance.

- Updates and administration: Are updates automatic, and can you manage settings across devices without excessive manual work?
- Detection and alerts: What does the product claim to detect, what alerts will you receive, and how are they prioritized?
- Response and monitoring: Who reviews alerts and takes action—your staff, the vendor, or a managed service provider? What support is included?
- Fit with your capacity: Can your business configure, monitor, and maintain the product with its available IT time and expertise?
- Fit with other safeguards: Does it complement your MFA, backups, access restrictions, training, and response plans rather than leaving those gaps unaddressed?
- Total cost: What will it cost to cover all relevant devices and obtain the administration, monitoring, and response support you actually need?
Ask for concrete explanations rather than relying on a product’s AI label. Official guidance reviewed here does not endorse a vendor or establish that one product is suitable for every small business.
A practical security baseline for a small business
- Inventory what you rely on. List business devices, software, data, and services. Identify risks and any contractual or regulatory obligations that apply.
- Protect devices and accounts. Install and maintain updated antivirus or anti-malware, patch operating systems and applications, and require MFA. Use unique strong passwords; consider a password manager.
- Build recoverable backups. Back up data regularly, protect the backup copies from unauthorized access or network threats, and test restoration. A disconnected copy or external drive can be part of the plan.
- Reduce avoidable exposure. Restrict access to sensitive data and train staff to recognize phishing and other common threats. Configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC with your email provider if you use company-domain email.
- Prepare for disruption. Write and test incident response, recovery, and business continuity plans so people know what to do if an account or device is compromised.
- Review the plan as the business changes. Revisit device coverage, access, backups, and obligations when you add systems, services, staff, or new ways of working.
Why the baseline matters for small firms
NIST’s April 14, 2026 initial public draft, Small Business Cybersecurity: Non-Employer Firms, attributes to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy estimates of 34.8 million small businesses in the United States and 81.9% of small businesses having no paid employees other than the owners. Those figures are reproduced from the SBA, not original NIST survey findings. The practical implication is that a security plan should be manageable for the people available to run it; a product that generates alerts no one can review may not address the business’s needs.
