Both formats can work offline, but a game-key card needs preparation first. It downloads the game to your Switch 2, and Nintendo requires an internet connection for the download and the title’s first launch. After that, you can start it offline with the game-key card inserted. A regular physical game card is the simpler choice when you want to avoid that download step.
What is the difference between a physical game card and a game-key card?
A regular Switch 2 game card is the standard physical-card format. A game-key card is also a physical card, but it does not contain the full game data: it lets the console download that data over the internet. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview explains the distinction and the setup requirements.

How to prepare a game-key card for offline play
- Check the required space. Look at the game packaging or its digital store page for the stated free-space requirement.
- Connect to the internet and download the game. Make sure the console has enough free space in internal storage or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo says an account is not required to download game-key-card data.
- Launch the game once while online. Nintendo says internet is required for the first launch.
- Keep the game-key card with you. After setup, the game can be started offline, but the card must be inserted.
Nintendo’s 2025 shareholder Q&A also confirms that an internet connection is needed to download game-key-card data for first use.

What if the game is a Virtual Game Card?
A Virtual Game Card is a separate digital format, not a physical game-key card. Nintendo says a digital game loaded as a Virtual Game Card can be played offline on that console. Before you leave an internet-connected location, check that the Virtual Game Card is loaded onto the console. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide for its guidance.

What can still affect offline play?
Nintendo’s offline guidance describes how the card and download process work; it does not guarantee that every game’s features work without a connection. A particular title may require online access for some features or depend on an update. Check the game’s own requirements if you need a specific mode to work offline.
