Hector Martin resigned as Asahi Linux’s project lead effective immediately in February 2025. The project did not appoint one successor: it announced that seven developers would share decision-making. Martin’s explanation was personal and included burnout, sustained user demands, personal turmoil, harassment he said affected him and his family, and frustration with getting Asahi’s work into the Linux kernel. Those are his account of the circumstances, not independent findings about the people or institutions he discussed.
What happened to Asahi Linux’s project lead?
On February 13, 2025, Asahi Linux announced that Martin was stepping down and that the project would move from a single-lead structure to shared governance. In his own post the following day, Martin wrote: “I’m resigning as lead of the Asahi Linux project, effective immediately.”
The project’s announcement named seven developers to share decision-making: Alyssa Rosenzweig, chaos_princess (Sasha Finkelstein), Davide Cavalca, Neal Gompa, James Calligeros, Janne Grunau, and Sven Peter. The team framed the change as a way to avoid placing a large project on one person’s shoulders.
Why did Hector Martin say he was leaving?
Martin described the resignation as the result of burnout and a difficult period. In his February 14, 2025 post, he cited recurring demands from users for features and hardware support, declining donations, and personal turmoil during 2024. He also said he and his family had faced harassment. These details are Martin’s stated reasons and claims; they should not be treated as independently verified findings.

He also expressed frustration with the process of upstreaming Asahi changes into the Linux kernel and alleged harmful conduct by some maintainers. That account reflects his perspective on the work and his interactions; it does not establish that every maintainer or the kernel community as a whole acted in the way he described.
Martin separately said he was stepping down as upstream maintainer for Apple ARM support. That was related to his work on Linux support for Apple hardware, but it was distinct from his resignation as Asahi Linux project lead.

Who leads Asahi Linux now?
Rather than naming a replacement for Martin, the project announced a seven-person group sharing decision-making. As of October 4, 2026, Asahi Linux’s live governance page lists the same seven people as board members: Alyssa Rosenzweig, chaos_princess (Sasha Finkelstein), Davide Cavalca, Neal Gompa, James Calligeros, Janne Grunau, and Sven Peter. The roster is a snapshot of the live page on that date and may change.
How does Asahi Linux’s shared governance work?
The governance page describes day-to-day development as using “lazy consensus”: contributors do the work, and another developer can veto a change to prompt discussion. The board’s role is different. It handles logistical matters, including infrastructure and funding, rather than serving as a single replacement project lead who personally directs every contribution.

The shift therefore separates two kinds of responsibility: contributors make and discuss technical changes, while the board oversees project logistics. It is a move away from relying on one person to carry the project’s leadership and organizational load.
What changed about project funding?
In the February 13, 2025 announcement, Asahi Linux said Open Source Collective would facilitate donations to the project as a whole through Open Collective, replacing Martin’s Patreon as the project’s primary funding source. The announcement said donations would help pay for hardware and developer time. This is a project-support route, not evidence of a commission or referral partnership.

The same announcement said the project’s downstream Linux tree contained more than 1,000 Apple Silicon patches that had not yet been upstreamed at that time. That was the project’s figure on February 13, 2025—not a current patch count.

The departure changed the project’s leadership structure, not its stated goal of developing Linux support for Apple Silicon. The team chose shared decision-making and a board for logistical oversight instead of appointing a single successor. Martin’s account also makes clear that his resignation involved both personal pressures and frustration with technical and community processes; it should not be reduced to a single cause.

Whether the new arrangement changes the pace or direction of development cannot be concluded from the leadership announcement alone. The project’s governance page explains how decisions are structured, while its announcement and Martin’s post document the transition and his reasons in February 2025.
