Dolby Atmos is a spatial-audio format designed to place sound around and above you. To hear it at home, you need Atmos-enabled content, a compatible playback source and audio system, and settings and connections that let the format pass through the entire chain. That could mean a compatible TV or soundbar, or an AV receiver and speakers with height channels.
What Dolby Atmos does
Dolby Atmos describes audio that can be placed in a three-dimensional listening space, including overhead—not a particular speaker or soundbar. Dolby compares it to “an instruction guide for the speakers in your TV, your home theater, your tablet, or your laptop that tells them how to sound their best when you watch entertainment in Dolby Atmos.” The sound you actually hear depends on the content and the compatible device playing it.
A TV or soundbar may use processing to create a sense of height, while a receiver-based system can use physical height or overhead speakers. Those approaches are not identical, so an Atmos label alone does not guarantee the same effect from every setup. Dolby’s speaker setup guide explains the format and its playback options.
What you need to hear Atmos at home
Atmos works only when each part of the playback chain supports it. Check these four things before buying equipment or troubleshooting:

- A compatible playback source: This might be a smart TV app, streaming device, game console, or Blu-ray player. Support can vary by service and device.
- An Atmos-capable audio system: Options include a compatible TV, a Dolby Atmos soundbar, or an Atmos-capable AV receiver or processor paired with speakers.
- A supported connection and correct settings: The audio must travel from the source to the TV or audio system through a compatible connection, and Atmos output may need to be enabled in the device settings.
A compatible soundbar cannot turn a non-Atmos stream into Atmos. Confirm that the specific title, service plan, source, audio device, and connection all support the format. Dolby’s streaming and device guide and home entertainment FAQs outline the checks.
Choose a setup that fits your room

TV and soundbar
This is a compact route if you want fewer separate components. Dolby describes connecting an Atmos soundbar to a TV over ARC or eARC, or using the soundbar’s HDMI passthrough path. The correct route depends on the ports and capabilities of your actual TV, soundbar, and source; check their labels and manuals rather than assuming every HDMI port passes Atmos. Receiver and height speakers
A receiver-based setup gives you more control over speaker placement, but requires room for the components and speakers. Dolby’s layout notation makes configurations easier to compare: in 5.1.2, the first number counts ear-level speakers, the second counts subwoofers, and the third counts height speakers. Dolby describes overhead speakers and Atmos-enabled speaker technology as ways to provide height sound. Work through the signal chain in order. A single unsupported link can prevent Atmos from reaching the speakers, even if another device in the setup carries an Atmos label.

- Confirm the title. Check that the specific film, episode, track, or disc offers Atmos.
- Check the service and subscription. Verify that Atmos is included for that title and plan in your market.
- Check the playback source. Confirm that the device supports Atmos with the service or disc you are using.
- Review audio settings. Select Atmos output or enable the relevant format if the device requires it.
- Check the connection path. Confirm that the devices are connected through the appropriate ARC/eARC port or compatible HDMI passthrough route, and that the ports support the required audio format.
Device menus and available settings vary by model. Consult the manuals for your TV, source, and sound system if the expected Atmos option or indicator does not appear.
