Use only the VPN profile and credentials supplied by the provider or administrator for the service you intend to use, and confirm that your exact ASUS router model and firmware support the feature. Import a provider-issued .ovpn profile through the supported VPN Client or VPN Fusion workflow. Do not confuse that profile with a whole-router settings backup: they serve different purposes, and ASUS warns that a particular EBA63 debug-sharing file must not be restored to the access point.
Know which file and VPN workflow you need
A router can act as a VPN client, connecting its traffic to a VPN service, or as a VPN server, letting remote devices connect back to the router. The files and setup paths are not interchangeable.
| Purpose | What the ASUS router does | File or information involved |
|---|---|---|
| VPN client | Connects outbound to a VPN service or organization | A profile supplied for that service and protocol, commonly an .ovpn file for OpenVPN, plus any required account credentials. See ASUS VPN Client setup and ASUS OpenVPN Client in VPN Fusion. |
| VPN server | Accepts remote connections to the ASUS router | Server configuration and, where applicable, exported client configuration used by remote devices. ASUS documents this separately in its VPN server setup guidance. |
| Router settings backup | Saves or restores router configuration | A router configuration file, not a provider-issued VPN client profile. Restore behavior is model-specific; consult the exact model’s manual. |
An .ovpn extension or plausible filename does not prove a file is genuine. The reviewed ASUS setup pages describe importing a provider-supplied profile; they do not document a universal ASUS signature or checksum check for all models and configuration formats.
Check model, firmware, and routing behavior first
ASUS VPN capabilities and interface labels vary by model, operating mode, and firmware. Look up your exact model’s specifications and current support documentation before following steps written for another router. ASUS’s VPN Fusion OpenVPN instructions identify model and firmware qualifications for that interface; a menu shown in a tutorial may not exist on your device.

Also decide which devices should use the connection. VPN Fusion-capable routers can assign a VPN profile to selected devices or apply it to all devices. On models using the general VPN Client workflow, ASUS says traffic from all devices may be directed through the established VPN client. Check the controls displayed by your router before enabling the profile so the routing scope matches your intent.
Get a trusted VPN profile and credentials
- Ask the provider or administrator which protocol to use. ASUS notes that VPN services may support different protocols and advises confirming the connection type with the service provider before configuring the router. Use the profile intended for that protocol and service.
- Obtain the file through a known channel. Download it from the provider’s official account or support channel, or request it from your organization’s administrator using contact details you already trust. Obtain the corresponding username and password or other authentication information through the provider’s stated process.
- Reject unexplained files. Do not import a profile sent by an unverified person, one whose origin cannot be confirmed, or a router settings backup presented as a VPN profile. Ask the provider or administrator for a fresh profile instead.
ASUS USA’s VPN Client article, last updated March 24, 2026, says to confirm the VPN connection type with the provider and use the provider’s authentication details. ASUS’s VPN Fusion OpenVPN guide likewise describes importing a provider-supplied file. Neither source describes a universal file-authentication control or says that scanning a file proves who issued it.

Import the profile in the supported ASUS interface
VPN Fusion with OpenVPN
- Sign in to the router’s web interface and open VPN > VPN Fusion, if your model and firmware provide it.
- Create a profile and choose OpenVPN.
- Import the OpenVPN file received from your provider or administrator. Enter a username and password if the service provides them or requires them.
- Select Apply, then enable the profile. Check that the profile reports Connected.
These labels and steps follow ASUS’s VPN Fusion OpenVPN guide; availability depends on model and firmware.
VPN Client on other supported firmware
Some ASUS firmware uses a VPN Client interface instead of VPN Fusion. Follow the client setup path in your router’s current manual or ASUS support page, select the provider’s matching VPN type, import the provider-issued profile where supported, and enter the required authentication details. Do not substitute a server export or settings backup for the client profile. ASUS’s VPN Client guide covers the Web GUI workflow; the exact menus may differ across devices and firmware.

Keep router backups separate from VPN profiles
A settings backup can contain router-wide configuration, so treat it as a distinct and potentially sensitive file. Do not import it into a VPN client simply because it came from someone who uses ASUS hardware.
The warning is model- and workflow-specific: the ZenWiFi EBA63 User Manual, section 3.1.4, says that the original password is removed from the configuration file made for debug sharing and instructs users not to import that file into the access point. This is not a general statement about every ASUS backup or every VPN profile. For any other model, use that model’s manual for restore instructions rather than extrapolating from the EBA63 warning.

Verify the connection and troubleshoot failures
If the profile stays disconnected or cannot reach the server, work through checks that distinguish a bad profile from a broader connectivity issue:
- Confirm ordinary internet access works without the VPN profile enabled.
- Check the selected VPN type, server address, username, password, and profile against the provider’s current instructions. Ask for a replacement profile if you cannot verify its origin or currency.
- Test the same VPN service from another device using the provider’s instructions. If that device also cannot connect, ASUS’s VPN Fusion guidance recommends contacting the VPN server administrator.
- Update the router firmware using the instructions for the exact model, then retry the provider’s recommended configuration.
- Check whether your router’s LAN subnet overlaps with the VPN server’s subnet; ASUS identifies an overlapping subnet as a possible connection problem.
- If the VPN works from another device but the router still cannot connect, ASUS’s general troubleshooting guidance includes factory reset and QIS setup in some cases. Treat this as a last resort: a reset can erase your router settings, so preserve a backup only as directed by your model’s manual and reconfigure from trusted sources.
These checks are listed in ASUS’s VPN Client and VPN Fusion support guidance. A router acting as an outbound client to a VPN service does not require the public WAN IP condition ASUS mentions for using the router as a VPN server; that condition concerns inbound remote access to an ASUS-hosted server.

Understand what ASUS security tools can and cannot inspect
Where supported, Router Security Assessment can help review router settings, and AiProtection can provide security features subject to the router’s mode and firmware. These checks do not establish that an imported VPN file came from the right source.
ASUS UK explains in its AiProtection guide that when a device uses a VPN, its traffic is encrypted and routed through the VPN, so AiProtection cannot inspect that traffic for threat detection. Do not rely on AiProtection as a way to verify a VPN profile or inspect the contents of encrypted VPN traffic.
When the ASUS router is the VPN server
If your goal is to connect a phone or laptop back to your home router, configure the router’s VPN server feature rather than importing a commercial provider’s client profile. Supported server protocols differ by model, and ASUS says using the router as a VPN server requires a public WAN IP for inbound remote access. That requirement does not apply simply because the router is an outbound VPN client.
For ASUS-hosted OpenVPN server configurations, ASUS says to export the configuration again after changing server settings so the client configuration reflects those changes. This advice concerns the router’s server-export workflow; it does not mean every provider-issued client profile needs to be regenerated after an ASUS server setting changes. See the ASUS VPN server setup page for the server-side procedure.
