Check both the network settings for the device and any proxy settings or policies specific to the browser. Then compare the public IP address under controlled conditions to see whether the observed route changes. A proxy setting shows what a layer is configured to do; it does not prove that every app or request on the device uses that proxy.
What to check
A proxy is an intermediary for web traffic. It may be configured through automatic detection, a setup script, a manually entered server, a browser-specific setting, a VPN connection, or an administrator-managed browser policy. Because these settings can exist at different layers, one check cannot show every app’s route.
- Inspect the active network’s operating-system settings. Look for automatic detection, a setup script, or a manually configured proxy address and port.
- Check the browser. It may have a browser-specific proxy setup or be controlled by a work or school policy.
- Corroborate with a public-IP comparison. Compare the address under the suspected configuration and, only if appropriate, after changing it.
Check proxy settings in Windows
Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. Microsoft lists automatic proxy detection, setup scripts, and manual configuration as the available proxy controls. Review the active options and note whether a script is enabled or a server name or IP address and port are entered. See Microsoft’s Windows proxy instructions.
If you connect through a VPN, inspect the proxy configuration for that VPN connection separately; it may differ from the general network proxy setting. If your organization manages the connection or requires a proxy, ask its IT department before changing anything. Microsoft directs users who do not have the necessary setup details to contact their IT department.

Check proxy settings on Android
Open the device’s Settings, select the connected Wi-Fi network or its details, and inspect its proxy option. Android includes proxy settings among network settings, but menu names and the exact route vary by device maker and Android version. Google’s instructions are in Manage advanced network settings on your Android phone.
Check the network you are actually using. A setting attached to a Wi-Fi network may not describe traffic when the device is on cellular data or connected to a different network.

Check browser-specific settings and policies
Do not assume the browser always follows the general system setting. Microsoft documents a Dev Proxy configuration that can affect a browser instance without changing system proxy settings; Dev Proxy normally registers as the system proxy, but that browser-specific arrangement is an exception worth knowing about. See Microsoft’s guide to using Dev Proxy with a browser.
On a work or school browser, an administrator may set or control proxy behavior through Chrome policies. If the browser says it is managed, or a setting cannot be changed, a policy may be responsible. Check with the administrator rather than trying to override an organization’s configuration. Google documents managed settings in Set Chrome policies for users or browsers.

Use a public-IP comparison as a cross-check
A public-IP check can help establish whether the route observed by a particular browser changed, but it cannot identify every intermediary or prove that all apps on the device use the same route. Treat it as corroboration, not as a complete proxy or privacy test.
- On the network and browser you want to check, use a reputable public-IP checking service and record the reported address.
- Change or disable the suspected proxy only if you are authorized and it is safe to do so, then check again using the same browser and connection conditions.
- Compare the results. A changed public IP is evidence that the observed route changed; it does not establish exactly which intermediary caused the change or how other apps are routed.
If the results do not match your expectations, check that you are still on the same Wi-Fi or cellular network, that you have not switched VPN connections, and that you are comparing the same browser. Also distinguish a general system proxy from a browser-specific setting, automatic or script-based configuration from a manual server entry, and a user-controlled setting from a managed policy.

What the result can—and cannot—tell you
- A configured proxy option indicates intended configuration at that settings layer, not conclusive proof that a particular request used it.
- A public IP that changes during a controlled comparison indicates a change in the route observed by that browser under those conditions, but does not identify every part of the route.
- No change in public IP does not by itself prove that no proxy is configured; the setting may apply only to certain traffic, or a different layer may be relevant.
- One app’s result should not be generalized to every app on the device, because system, browser, VPN, network, and policy settings can differ.
