Choose VS Code if your workflow depends on particular extensions, extensive customization, or team-wide compatibility. Choose Cursor if you want an AI-centered coding workflow in an environment based on VS Code. Consider Zed if native editing, human collaboration, and reviewable agent changes suit your work—and its extension support covers your project.

The best fit depends on your actual codebase and team, not a blanket claim that one editor is fastest or best. Check essential extensions, try representative tasks, review privacy settings, and estimate recurring AI costs before switching.

Start with what your workflow cannot do without

List the requirements that would make an editor impractical to use: essential language or framework support, extensions, team conventions, AI tasks, collaboration needs, privacy rules, and a spending limit. Test those requirements against the project you actually work on. A general feature list is less useful than confirming that your formatter, debugger, or other must-have tool behaves as expected.

If this matters most Start with Reason to consider it
A specific extension, deep customization, or team compatibility VS Code Its official documentation emphasizes extensions for language, framework, and service support, as well as configurable profiles. Zed has its own extension system and says VS Code extensions do not transfer directly.
AI-centered codebase work in a VS Code-based setting Cursor Cursor documents workflows for understanding a codebase, planning and building, fixing bugs, and reviewing changes.
Native editing, human collaboration, and reviewable agent edits Zed Zed describes built-in collaboration and agentic changes with editable diff review. Confirm that its extension support covers your project before committing.
Privacy-sensitive code Compare all three Settings, policy terms, organization rules, and the selected model or provider all affect whether an editor is suitable.
Predictable AI spending Compare actual usage and billing Subscription prices alone do not determine total model costs; included usage and additional billing differ.

When should you choose VS Code?

VS Code is the strongest starting point when your work relies on a particular extension or your team needs a common, configurable editor setup. Its extension system is intended to add support for languages, frameworks, and services, so check the exact tools your project uses rather than assuming an extension is available or behaves the same elsewhere.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

It is also a practical choice when changing editors would complicate onboarding or standardization. VS Code is not limited to a conventional editing workflow: its documentation also describes AI agent workflows. Choose it for ecosystem fit and customization, not because AI features are necessarily absent.

When should you choose Cursor?

Cursor is a good candidate when AI is central to how you want to work and you prefer a VS Code-based environment. Its documented workflows include codebase understanding, planning and implementation, bug fixing, and reviewing changes. That makes it worth evaluating for work that moves beyond inline suggestions into larger coding tasks.

Test those tasks against your own repository: ask the editor to work through a representative change, inspect what it proposes, and decide whether the review process fits your standards. Cursor’s documentation calls it “a coding agent for building ambitious software”; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent assessment of results.

When should you choose Zed?

Consider Zed if native editing and built-in human collaboration appeal to your team, or if you want agent-driven changes that you can inspect and edit as diffs. Zed describes support for multi-file changes, background agents, MCP, and external agent integrations.

Check privacy against your organization’s rules

Privacy depends on the editor’s settings and policy terms, and may also depend on which model or provider handles a request. Cursor says that when Privacy Mode is enabled, code data is not used for training by Cursor or its providers. Verify that the setting is enabled if your requirements depend on it.

Zed says prompts and code are discarded after each request and are not used for training, with a short-term retention exception for certain provider-designated models. It describes telemetry controls separately. For either product, have the organization review the current policy wording and settings against its rules before sending sensitive code or prompts.

Do not choose on speed claims alone

Zed’s comparison page publishes claims about startup time, typing latency, and memory use, including a typical startup time under one second for Zed and 3–5+ seconds for VS Code with extensions. These are Zed-reported vendor comparisons, not independent evidence that establishes performance across machines, projects, extension sets, or all three editors.

No independently published named statistic comparing the performance or productivity of VS Code, Cursor, and Zed is established in the material available here. If responsiveness matters, try each candidate on your own machine with a representative project and extension setup rather than treating vendor figures as a guaranteed outcome.

Run a practical trial before switching

  1. Inventory the project. Write down required extensions, language support, formatting and debugging needs, team conventions, privacy requirements, and any AI tasks you expect to use.
  2. Check compatibility first. Confirm that each candidate supports the must-have capabilities. For Zed in particular, do not assume VS Code extensions can be installed directly.
  3. Try the same representative work. Use the same project and comparable tasks in each candidate: routine editing, a change spanning multiple files, and any AI-assisted work that matters to your team. Review the resulting changes rather than judging only how quickly a task starts.
  4. Review collaboration and control. Decide whether the editor’s way of sharing work and reviewing agent changes suits your team’s process.
  5. Check privacy and estimate recurring cost. Verify the settings and policy terms you would use, then compare expected AI usage with current plan inclusions and billing terms.
  6. Make the decision at project or team scale. Choose the editor that meets non-negotiable requirements with the least disruption; if a team has different needs, a single editor may not be the right standard for every workflow.
