FreeMcBoot (FMCB) avoids soldering and is removable, but it cannot boot autonomously on some late Slim consoles. A modchip is a more invasive option for owners who need a chip-specific feature and have access to expert installation. Open PS2 Loader (OPL) and the storage device you use with it are separate decisions from how homebrew starts.
Does FMCB support my console?
FMCB works on nearly all PS2 models, including fat systems and most Slim consoles, but compatibility depends on the console’s boot ROM as well as the memory card. Sony’s boot ROM 2.30 blocked the system-update mechanism FMCB uses on many late SCPH-900xx Slim models and on PS2-TV systems.
The ConsoleMods FreeMcBoot FAQ identifies unsupported late models among SCPH-90000 consoles manufactured from 2008 Q3, with date code 8C. That is a useful warning, not a definitive test: the FAQ cautions that not every R-chassis or date-code-8C console is necessarily incompatible. Check the ROM version in uLaunchELF rather than deciding from the chassis or date code alone. Compatibility documentation may change; these model and ROM details reflect the ConsoleMods guides and FAQ as of October 4, 2026.
FMCB also requires a compatible MagicGate memory card. Some third-party cards do not reliably implement the per-card signatures used by updates, so a card advertised as preloaded with FMCB is not a guarantee of compatibility with every console.

Why FMCB doesn’t work on some SCPH-9XXXX
FMCB uses a system-update exploit to modify the PS2 startup menu. On consoles with the later boot ROM 2.30, Sony blocked that mechanism. Many late SCPH-900xx Slims therefore cannot start FMCB directly from a memory card, even if the card and installation are otherwise sound.
OpenTuna, also known as Fortuna, is a possible alternative for many consoles that cannot boot FMCB autonomously. It must be launched manually each time; it can then start an ELF from the memory card. The OpenTuna installer README gives a target ROM range of 1.10 through 2.30 and adds “2.50?” with uncertainty. It lists fat and Slim models from SCPH-18000 through SCPH-90010, as well as PS2-TV. Check the installer’s current documentation for the exact console and ROM before relying on it.

FreeHDBoot (FHDB) is another software route, but it is for fat consoles with a network adapter and an internal hard drive. It uses the PS2’s APA drive format and has more setup requirements than a memory-card route.
What is FreeMcBoot (FMCB)?
FMCB is a software boot method installed on a compatible PS2 memory card. It changes the startup menu so the console can launch homebrew, such as OPL. You can stop using this boot path by removing the card; FMCB itself is not a permanent hardware modification.

The ConsoleMods Wiki’s PS2:FMCB page summarizes its trade-off this way: “This method, in comparison to modchipping, is not permanent, is easy to install and use, and less likely to conflict with other software; on the other hand, it cannot by itself allow the console to play import/backup discs.” That limitation matters if the reason for considering a modchip is disc-region or backup-disc behavior rather than homebrew.

When a modchip makes sense—and what to check first
A modchip may suit an owner who needs a feature provided by a particular chip and has an experienced installer. It is not a general compatibility upgrade: features differ among chips, and an installed chip can conflict with FMCB. The ConsoleMods FAQ documents startup freezes and black screens associated with chip conflicts. If the console is already chipped, identify the chip and consult its own documentation before installing or troubleshooting FMCB.

- Choose a software route if your goal is homebrew, you want to avoid soldering, and your console and memory card support the route.
- Consider a chip only when you have a specific chip feature in mind and can account for the installation risk.
- For a late SCPH-900xx or PS2-TV, confirm ROM compatibility and investigate a documented manual-launch alternative such as OpenTuna rather than assuming FMCB will start automatically.
Will FMCB/FHDB allow me to play pirated game discs?
FMCB itself does not enable import or backup discs, as the ConsoleMods PS2:FMCB guide states. FHDB is another software boot path, not a disc-unlocking feature. A modchip’s disc-related behavior depends on the particular chip; do not assume every chip supports every disc or console. Use homebrew and game images only in accordance with applicable law and the rights attached to the games.
OPL and storage are separate from the boot method
Open PS2 Loader is homebrew software that a supported boot method can launch; it is neither a modchip nor an exploit. Its project repository lists USB mass storage, MX4SIO (an SD card connected through a memory-card-port adapter), iLink storage, SMBv1 network shares, and ATA/IDE hard drives as storage transports. Listed formats include ISO, compressed ZSO, USB Extreme, ELF homebrew, and HDLoader format on HDD.

Those options do not mean every game behaves identically across devices or setups. For game-specific questions, consult OPL’s compatibility reports. The practical sequence is to determine how the console can start homebrew, then choose OPL (or another application) and a compatible storage setup; an internal HDD or network share may require supporting hardware that a memory-card utility does not.
