Choose the CD4050B when a timer signal must keep its logic polarity; choose the CD4049UB when it must be inverted. Both are six-channel logic buffers/converters, not timer generators. They can condition or drive a signal in a timer circuit, but the right choice depends on polarity and on whether the part can meet the circuit’s voltage and load requirements.
What is the difference between the CD4050B and CD4049UB?
The main difference is logic sense: Texas Instruments (TI) identifies the CD4050B as a noninverting buffer and the CD4049UB as an inverting buffer. Both devices have six channels and are described for buffer and logic-level conversion applications.

Which part should you use to drive a timer input?
Use the CD4050B to preserve polarity
If an active-high input must remain active-high, or an active-low input must remain active-low, the CD4050B’s noninverting function is the direct match. Confirm that the signal levels at its input and output are suitable for the timer IC and the selected supply.
Use the CD4049UB when inversion is wanted
The CD4049UB inverts its input. That can suit a timer circuit whose next stage requires the opposite logic sense, but it changes which transition represents an active signal. If inversion is not wanted, account for it elsewhere in the logic.

Neither part sets the timer interval
These are buffers and converters inserted into a signal path; the surrounding circuit or a separate timer device establishes the interval. Without a specific schematic, supply, and load, it is not possible to infer how either part would affect a circuit’s timing, edge behavior, or oscillator stability.
Can either IC accept a signal above its supply voltage?
TI describes both devices for logic-level conversion in which the input signal’s high level can exceed VCC. That is a specified use case, not permission to exceed every device limit or to apply any higher voltage under any condition. Check the exact manufacturer datasheet and its absolute maximum ratings and operating conditions before connecting a higher-voltage signal.

How much load can the outputs drive?
TI lists CMOS current sink/source driver applications for the device family. Its datasheet also says the devices can directly drive two DTL or TTL loads, with the stated application condition of VCC = 5 V, VOL ≤ 0.4 V, and IOL ≥ 3.3 mA. Those figures belong to that particular datasheet application statement; they are not a guarantee for arbitrary loads or conditions. (TI CD4049UB and CD4050B datasheet, Rev. TI’s product pages list an 18 mA maximum sink-current parameter for each family. Treat that as a listed parameter, not as a universal recommended load current: use the exact part’s datasheet tables to check guaranteed output voltage and current for your supply, temperature, and load. Checklist before choosing a part
- Identify whether the timer input needs the original signal polarity or an inverted one.
- Check the input voltage, intended conversion conditions, and supply rail against the exact device datasheet.
- Determine the driven load and the high- and low-level voltages the timer input requires.
- Confirm the package and exact device suffix rather than relying on a generic family name.
- Check that the following timer input has a defined threshold and that the signal transition is suitable for it.
