Choose a spot that clearly covers the activity you care about, lets people or vehicles move across the camera’s view, and has a reliable connection. For many Arlo outdoor cameras, the starting point is at least 7 feet (2 meters) high with the camera angled slightly downward. Check your exact model’s instructions, then test the view, signal, and motion detection before treating the location as final.
Start with the activity you need to see
Pick the area that matters most: a front door, path, driveway, gate, or section of yard. Frame the likely approach or activity, rather than giving most of the image to incidental scenery. A camera that covers the critical route well is usually more useful than one mounted for the broadest-looking view.
Before drilling, hold the camera at the proposed position and check its live view in the Arlo Secure App. Confirm that the important area is visible and that the camera can connect reliably from that exact spot.
Set the height, angle, and motion path
Use the model’s mounting guidance
Arlo’s Essential Solar guidance recommends mounting at least 7 feet (2 meters) high and aiming slightly downward. Arlo’s Pro 5S manual instead describes 6.5 feet (2 meters) or higher and recommends an Arlo Outdoor Mount at that height. These are model-specific manufacturer recommendations, not guarantees of detection in every location. Follow the manual for your camera if its guidance differs. Keep the target in the motion-sensitive area
For Essential Solar and Pro 5S guidance, the lower two-thirds of the image is the motion-sensitive region. Aim so the person, vehicle, or other activity you want detected stays in that part of the frame. Arlo also notes that its motion sensor is more sensitive to subjects moving side-to-side across the view than to movement straight toward or away from the camera. If you can choose between two otherwise suitable positions, prefer the one where activity crosses the frame.
Account for distance
For Pro 5S, Arlo identifies 5 to 20 feet (1.5 to 6 meters) as the best motion-detection area and says detection is possible up to 25 feet (7.6 meters). Those figures are specific to the Pro 5S manual; do not assume they apply to other Arlo models or every scene. Check the exact camera’s manual and test the intended activity area. Arlo Pro 5S manual

Check the signal and avoid view problems
Test the camera’s connection at the intended mounting point before drilling. Arlo’s Essential Solar mounting instructions specifically advise checking for a strong Wi-Fi signal at the outdoor location. If the connection is weak, try a position closer to the router or a supported hub, then check again in the app. Arlo Essential Solar mounting instructions
- Avoid aiming through glass or directly at mirrors and other reflective surfaces.
- Arlo warns that a wall, light, or eave within 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) of the camera’s sides or front can cause glare or hazy video. Keep nearby surfaces outside that clearance where possible.
- Check the view at night if nearby lights, reflective surfaces, or close eaves could affect the image.
For solar models, prioritize actual sun exposure
A location that works for the view may not work for solar charging. For Essential Solar cameras, Arlo recommends direct sunlight and warns against persistent shade beneath eaves, overhangs, covered patios, or trees. Its guidance estimates approximately two hours of sunlight per day for the documented camera, but charging depends on settings, use, activity, weather, debris, and tilt. If you use a compatible Arlo Solar Panel, Arlo says to place it within 4.5 feet (1.3 meters) of the camera, in direct sunlight. Verify that the exact panel is compatible with your camera. Match the camera’s view and mount to the location
Field of view varies by model. Arlo’s 2026 reference groups camera families at diagonal fields of view of 180°, 160°, 130°, and 110°; only certain models support adjustable field of view. Check the precise camera’s specification and app options rather than assuming a family-wide or adjustable view. A wider view can cover more area, but the important activity still needs to be visible and positioned for detection. Arlo field-of-view reference

Confirm mount compatibility before buying or installing an accessory. The Pro 5S manual recommends an Arlo Outdoor Mount for its stated mounting height, but compatibility should be checked for your specific camera. Choose hardware suited to the mounting surface and leave the camera accessible for cleaning and adjustment.

- Identify the main activity to capture and the direction people or vehicles are likely to move.
- At the proposed location, check the live view, connection, nearby obstructions, and—if the camera is solar-powered—direct sunlight.
- Check the exact model’s instructions for height, angle, field of view, mount, and solar-accessory compatibility.
- Install and aim the camera so the target activity appears in the lower two-thirds of the image where that model’s guidance specifies this region.
- Walk through the expected detection area and check motion alerts in the Arlo Secure App. Adjust the camera aim and motion sensitivity if detection is unreliable.
- Review the image at night if close lights, reflective surfaces, or eaves could cause glare or haze.
Arlo’s recommendations are manufacturer guidance. They do not independently establish how well a camera will detect motion in every home, weather condition, mounting position, or firmware version, so validate your chosen placement in the conditions where you plan to use it.
