PC emulators are experimental and their compatibility varies by game and build. PlayStation Remote Play can put a PS5 game on another screen, but it streams from a PS5 or PS4 console; it is not a way to play without one. A PC release, when available, is a separate product rather than the PS5 version running through emulation.
How PS5 emulation and playing on a PS5 differ
Emulation attempts to reproduce a console’s hardware and software behavior on another system, such as a PC. Playing on a PS5 uses the console the game was made to support. Remote Play takes a different approach: the console runs the game and streams its output to a compatible device.

Is there a working PS5 emulator?
There are public PS5 emulator projects, but “working” does not mean that an emulator can reliably run a broad library of PS5 games. KytyPS5 describes its development focus as expanding game compatibility and improving boot reliability. SharpEmu describes itself as experimental. Those project descriptions are not Sony support or independent guarantees that a particular game will run.
There has been reported progress. On September 27, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that SharpEmu version 0.0.4-release.2 reportedly ran six titles at 60 FPS. That is a report about one build and six games, not a general performance promise for other titles, PCs, or settings. GamesRadar also reported six games described as fully playable based on an emulator developer’s claims; that is not an official Sony compatibility certification.

Compatibility is version- and game-specific, and published project status can change quickly. The available reporting does not establish a representative, independently benchmarked comparison showing that a high-end PC will reliably outperform a PS5.
Can you play PS5 games on PC without a PS5?
Sometimes, but the route matters. A compatible official PC release lets you play that PC edition without a PS5. It is not the PS5 version, and PC and console editions of PlayStation Studios games are separate products. Sony says saves currently cannot transfer between the PC and PS4/PS5 versions.

Emulation is another possible route, but it is experimental and its game-by-game compatibility is uncertain. Remote Play does not remove the console requirement: a PS4 or PS5 must run the game and stream it to your PC or other device.
Sony’s backward-compatibility information is about PS4 games on PS5, not PS5 games on PC. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, while noting exceptions and possible missing functions, errors, or unexpected behavior for some titles.

Can Remote Play replace a PS5 emulator?
Remote Play is a practical option if you own a PS5 or PS4 and want to play on a supported phone, tablet, computer, or other screen. The game runs on the console; the other device receives the stream. It therefore solves a different problem from emulation and cannot be used to play PS5 games without a console.
Sony lists at least 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. These are service recommendations, not guarantees of low latency or image quality; network conditions affect the experience.

For Windows, Sony’s setup instructions specify Windows 10 or 11, a PS5 console, a PlayStation account, an internet connection, a controller, and a USB cable for the described configuration. Those instructions apply to that Windows setup, not necessarily every Remote Play device. Check Sony’s PS Remote Play device and setup information for the client you plan to use.
Which option makes sense for you?
- Choose a PS5 console if you want the supported, predictable way to play PS5 games on a TV or monitor.
- Consider PC emulation only if you accept experimentation. Check the emulator’s current project status and the specific game’s compatibility; do not assume that a game shown running in one build will work the same way on your PC.
- Use Remote Play if you already have a PS4 or PS5 and want to stream compatible gameplay to another screen.
- Look for an official PC edition if you want to play a particular game on PC without a console. Confirm that the game has a PC release and account for the separate edition and save data.
Legal considerations for PS5 emulation
There is no single legality answer that applies everywhere. The rules can depend on your jurisdiction and on the specific activity, including emulator development, circumvention, copying games, and handling firmware. Emulator projects may describe their own guidance, but that does not settle the legal status for every user or location. Check current law and authoritative guidance for your jurisdiction, and do not assume that an emulator’s existence makes every way of obtaining or using game files lawful.
