Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual fundraising and awareness walk, held in more than 600 U.S. communities. “Memory walk” is broader wording, not the name of one nationally standardized event: check each listing to see who organizes it, what it supports, and what participants can expect.
What is the difference between an Alzheimer’s walk and a memory walk?
Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a specific event run by the Alzheimer’s Association to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The Association describes it as an annual event held in more than 600 communities nationwide. See its Fundraising Events page for the national program.
“Memory walk,” by contrast, is a general phrase. The Association’s national pages identify its own branded event but do not establish one shared definition or set of rules for every event called a memory walk. A local listing might be run by a different organization, so the name alone does not tell you where proceeds go or how the event works.
What should you expect at Walk to End Alzheimer’s?
Expect a local fundraising and awareness event rather than one gathering at a single national venue. Use the Association’s Find a Walk page to search for a nearby event. Its search supports ZIP codes and filters for keywords, category, format, and date.

The national information does not set one route distance, check-in time, accessibility standard, weather policy, or registration process for every local walk. Those details depend on the event. Read the local listing and contact its organizer or chapter if you need specifics before signing up.

Compare the actual listings rather than assuming two similarly named events are alike. These checks can help:

- Format and schedule: Check whether it is a scheduled in-person gathering or a flexible, self-directed fundraiser.
- Participation options: Look for walking, team fundraising, volunteering, or committee roles; availability varies by event.
- Accessibility and practical needs: Ask about route length and surface, mobility access, restrooms, seating, parking, sensory needs, and arrangements for companions or caregivers.
- Current logistics: Verify the event date, venue, registration instructions, check-in time, route, and any weather-related guidance on the local page.
Comfortable walking shoes may be useful, but the national event information does not specify a required shoe, route terrain, or distance.

Yes. The Association identifies walkers and team captains, and also offers event volunteer and committee opportunities. Its volunteer page describes event-day roles such as registration and check-in or cheering, as well as committee work. Ask the local chapter which roles are available for a particular event.

What if a scheduled event does not suit you?
Do What You Love to End ALZ is a separate, flexible fundraising option from the Association. Participants choose an activity and date, then fundraise around it; the program says it provides a welcome kit with tools and resources. It can suit someone who would rather organize participation around their own schedule than attend a group event.
