The best Windows search tool depends on what you need to find. Start with Windows Search for files across indexed locations and other Windows data; choose Everything for fast filename and folder-name hunts; consider Listary if you want keyboard-driven search, fuzzy matching, and file-workflow integration. There is no independently established speed winner among them, so match the tool to your search task and indexing needs.
Choose by what you need to find
- Part or all of a filename: Everything is purpose-built for finding files and folders by name.
- Files plus broader Windows data: Start with Windows Search, whose documented scope includes common data types such as documents, photos, email, contacts, calendar items, and multimedia.
- Search from the keyboard or file workflows: Consider Listary for its launcher-style search, fuzzy matching, filters, and Explorer integration.
- Text inside documents: Treat this as content search, not filename search. Everything can search contents, but it does not pre-index them by default and reading files for a content search can be slow.
Results depend on indexing scope, file types, volumes, and permissions. A tool cannot find what it cannot access or what falls outside its configured search scope.

These are feature-based distinctions, not results from a like-for-like speed test. No independently measured head-to-head benchmark establishes which tool is fastest across comparable PCs, drives, index states, and search tasks. Vendor speed claims should not be treated as a universal ranking.
Check Windows Search before installing another tool
If Windows Search is missing files you expect to find, first check which locations it indexes. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Review the current mode and included locations, then add folders you use if needed.

Classic mode
Classic mode covers Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop by default. It is a sensible starting point if your files are mostly in those common user folders and you want to keep indexing more limited.
Enhanced mode
Enhanced mode indexes the whole PC, providing broader coverage but potentially using more system resources. Choose it when you need system-wide coverage and are comfortable with that trade-off.

Microsoft’s documentation describes Windows Search as covering more than filenames, including common email, contact, calendar, document, photo, and multimedia data types. That does not mean every format, connected account, or location will be indexed on every PC.
When Everything is the better fit
Choose Everything when the main problem is remembering a filename—or even only part of one—while forgetting where you saved it. Its documented design indexes names rather than file contents, which suits filename hunts and narrowing a list of matching files or folders.

Everything can include external and network locations or file-list snapshots, but what appears depends on its configuration and access. For NTFS volumes, the vendor says indexing may require the Everything service or administrator privileges.
For text inside files, Everything offers a separate content search. Because contents are not indexed by default and the search reads files, this mode can be slow; it is not equivalent to instant filename lookup. voidtools describes Everything as running offline without telemetry or user-data collection. That is the vendor’s description, not an independent security audit.

When Listary is the better fit
Listary is worth considering if you want to bring up search from the keyboard and keep it close to file operations. Its feature page documents a search bar opened by pressing Ctrl twice, fuzzy matching, a deeper search window with filters, and type-to-search in File Explorer. It also supports configuring index scope, including network drives.
Listary says it has its own search index. That is a product-design distinction, not evidence that turning off Windows indexing will improve performance on every PC. Its feature descriptions are vendor statements rather than independent comparative test results.

Privacy, indexing, and changing Windows features
Microsoft says data gathered from semantic indexing is stored locally and is not stored by Microsoft or used to train AI models. Microsoft also cautions that installed apps may be able to read index data, so install software you trust.
On July 13, 2026, Windows Insider Blog authors Jeff Petty and Anderson Aiziro announced Windows Search changes including a calmer search home, clearer result sources, a control for web and Microsoft Store suggestions, and improved file search. Their post said the changes were gradually rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel and that the experience could vary by region. This is rollout information, not confirmation that every Windows 11 user has those changes; availability depends on the build and region.
