If a plug-in solar panel repeatedly trips a circuit breaker or another protective device, stop using it. Don’t keep resetting the breaker, and don’t open the electrical panel to investigate. Contact the system’s installer or supplier and arrange for a qualified electrician to assess the circuit, protective devices and solar equipment. Disconnect the system only if you can do so safely and in line with its manual.
What to do right away
- Stop using the solar system. Repeated trips are a warning that a protective device has detected a problem. Don’t keep resetting it to run the system.
- Look for urgent warning signs from a safe distance. Smoke, fire, a burning smell, unusual heat, buzzing or crackling, visible damage, or another trip means you should keep away from the suspected equipment. For fire or immediate danger in the UK, call 999 and tell responders solar panels are present. Emergency numbers differ by location.
- Contact the installer or supplier. Ask them to review the product and its instructions. Arrange for a qualified electrician to assess the home circuit and protective devices, particularly if the trip recurs or its cause is unclear.
- Disconnect only if safe and permitted by the manual. Do not touch damaged cables, connectors or exposed plug pins. Solar panels may still generate electricity in daylight even when switched off indoors.
- Leave repairs and testing to qualified professionals. Don’t alter or repair the cable, plug, inverter, breaker or RCD yourself. Don’t connect the system through an extension lead, adapter, cable reel or multiway socket.
What a breaker trip does—and doesn’t—tell you
A breaker or other protective device trips after detecting a condition it is designed to interrupt. Possible causes include an overload, short circuit, arc fault or ground fault, but the trip alone does not identify which one occurred. Frequent tripping can indicate a problem with a circuit or a connected device; ABB recommends that troubleshooting be handled by a licensed electrician: ABB guidance on circuit-breaker tripping.
A plug-in photovoltaic (PV) system feeds electricity back into an existing home circuit. UL Solutions describes possible overcurrent-protection, shock and GFCI-compatibility concerns for plug-in PV systems in the United States: UL Solutions on plug-in PV safety. These are system-level concerns, not a diagnosis of your particular installation.
Why you shouldn’t diagnose or fix it yourself
The cause could involve the solar equipment, the home circuit or a protective device. Determining which requires an assessment of the actual installation. The exact product, circuit design, condition of the wiring and protective devices, and the device that tripped all matter. Don’t open the panel, replace a breaker or RCD, or use a tester on live wiring as a do-it-yourself investigation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Tell the installer or electrician which device tripped, how often it has happened, whether it happens only while the solar system is connected, and whether you noticed heat, smell, sound or visible damage. These observations can help them decide what to inspect; they do not establish the fault.

United Kingdom
Electrical Safety First advises UK households to have at least a Type A bidirectional RCD on circuits intended for plug-in solar, and recommends having a competent electrician assess older or uncertain installations: Electrical Safety First guidance. A UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero study published on 16 June 2026 found that representative plug-in PV systems operated safely within the tested conditions, with effective protective-device operation and no sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects. It also reported variation in product performance and recommended product requirements and consumer guidance: Department for Energy Security and Net Zero study. Those findings do not determine whether a particular home, product or breaker is suitable.

UL Solutions’ U.S.-focused account discusses possible backfeed interactions and GFCI compatibility concerns. When its page was reviewed, UL said its UL 3700 Outline of Investigation for Interactive Plug-In PV Equipment and Systems was under development: UL Solutions on plug-in PV safety. The protective-device terms and requirements differ by jurisdiction, so don’t apply UK advice as if it were a universal code requirement.

How to prepare for a professional assessment
Without opening the panel or touching the equipment, note the product and inverter model if visible from a safe location, which protective device trips, and what was happening at the time. Share the product manual and describe any repeated trips or warning signs. The electrician can assess the applicable local rules, inverter instructions, circuit and the type and condition of the breaker and RCD or GFCI. Don’t try disconnecting or reconnecting components to compare results unless the manual specifically allows a safe action and you can follow it.
