Discord says it reviews legal requests and limits disclosure to what the applicable law and the request’s specific circumstances allow. What may be available depends on the legal authority, the records Discord has, and the user’s region. Discord’s public guidance does not provide a complete field-by-field chart showing which legal instrument obtains each kind of data.
What kinds of Discord data could be involved?
Discord’s privacy policy describes information it collects or stores. That does not establish that every listed record exists for a particular account, remains available, or will be disclosed in response to a particular request.
- Account details: information such as username, password, email address or phone number, birthday, and, in some cases, information used to verify age.
- User-created content: messages and drafts, voice messages, files, profile information, and information supplied when creating servers.
- Voice, video, and screen sharing: Discord says it generally does not store the contents of voice or video calls or channels, and does not store screen-share streaming content. It says it retains a stream thumbnail cover image for a short period.
These descriptions do not settle whether a particular message or other record can be produced. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal answer about message persistence, IP-address production, or recovery of deleted content. It would therefore be inaccurate to assume that Discord has a recording of a call, can recover deleted material, or will disclose an entire account simply because authorities make a request.
How do the three request routes differ?
Discord describes three distinct routes. Legal process seeks disclosure under applicable law; an emergency request uses a separate imminent-risk standard; and a preservation request holds data temporarily rather than obtaining it.

The 90-day periods are those stated in Discord’s law-enforcement guidance, which its editor’s note says was last updated May 2, 2025. Legal process seeking data that Discord has preserved should include Discord’s internal reference number.
Can police read Discord messages or get an IP address?
Discord’s guidance says it responds to valid legal requests, but it does not publish a complete field-by-field list of what each kind of legal process yields. The public material reviewed here therefore does not support a blanket rule that a particular document always obtains message contents, an IP address, or another specific record. The request must identify the records sought, and Discord’s response depends on the legal authority and what records it holds.

Discord says its transparency reporting aims to limit disclosure to the specific circumstances dictated by each request. That is different from unrestricted access to an account. The fact that Discord collects a kind of information also does not by itself show that it will disclose that information in every case.
How do requests work for users outside the United States?
Discord’s published guidance describes different handling by region; this is a description of Discord’s stated process, not legal advice about what a particular authority must do.

- European Economic Area: Discord directs requests concerning EEA users to Discord Netherlands B.V. Its guidance describes using a European Investigation Order where possible, or other mutual legal assistance procedures through Dutch authorities.
- Other users: Discord directs requests to Discord Inc. It says most international law enforcement should use mutual legal assistance procedures, and that it may choose to provide user information to foreign agencies on valid requests authorized by the requesting country’s law.
What information does Discord ask authorities to provide?
Discord asks government requesters to provide an identifier that can locate the account, server, or message involved. Its current law-enforcement guidance lists these account identifiers:
- 17- or 18-digit account ID
- Case-sensitive username
- Email address
- Phone number
Server IDs and message IDs should be included when those records are at issue. An older Discord help-center article from 2021 calls the user ID the preferred identifier and says IP addresses, usernames without discriminators, and server nicknames alone may be insufficient. Because that article predates the current guidance’s identifier list, it should not be treated as a definitive account of today’s username system.

Will Discord tell a user about a request?
For legal-process requests, Discord says it generally notifies the user and provides a copy of the process unless law or a court order prohibits notice. It may, at its discretion, omit notice in situations such as child exploitation or an imminent threat to life. Its stated policy is different for the other two routes: it does not notify users about preservation requests or emergency disclosure requests.
What do Discord’s transparency figures show?
Discord’s Q1 2022 transparency report gives historical counts, not current rates or a forecast. It reported receiving 1,446 pieces of legal process; 1,296 were found legally valid and specific enough to identify an account and produce relevant information. It also reported 182 emergency disclosure requests: Discord identified 145 accounts and disclosed basic subscriber information in response to 82 requests. These figures describe that quarter and should not be generalized to present-day request volumes or outcomes.
