For citation-forward exploration, a current 2026 comparison favors Perplexity; for longer investigations that become reports, compare ChatGPT Deep Research with Microsoft Researcher; for information inside Microsoft 365, use Copilot Search; and for everyday, local, or shopping searches, the same comparison favors Google’s AI search features. These are task-based recommendations, not results of hands-on testing, and features can vary by region, account, plan, and workspace settings.
Which AI search engine should you choose?
Start with what you need after the first answer. A quick conversational response, a trail of sources to inspect, a structured research report, and a search across company files are different jobs. The 2026 comparison reviewed here treats citation visibility, follow-up research, local search, privacy, ad-free results, and integration with existing tools as separate decision factors rather than naming a universal winner. Read the comparison’s criteria and recommendations.
| Need | Where to start | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Follow citations while exploring a topic | Perplexity | A 2026 editorial comparison characterizes it as strongest for citation-forward research. That is the comparison’s judgment, not an independently reproduced benchmark. |
| Investigate a question and produce a report | ChatGPT Deep Research or Microsoft Researcher | Both providers document multi-step research workflows; compare source controls and report format for your task. |
| Find information in workplace files and conversations | Microsoft 365 Copilot Search | It searches Microsoft 365 content and connected data sources; this is distinct from searching public web pages. |
| Everyday, local, or shopping-oriented searches | Google AI search features | A 2026 editorial comparison favors Google for these uses. Live availability and features may differ by region. |
| Locate a particular website or explore conventional results | A conventional search engine | Keep ordinary search available for direct navigation, broader result lists, and independent verification. |
These recommendations synthesize the cited comparisons and provider documentation; they are not a hands-on product test. The comparison also identifies privacy and ad-free results as relevant differentiators, but current terms and prices for each service are not established here. Check providers’ current details before choosing on those grounds.
When a research report is more useful than a quick answer
AI answer engines can be useful for orienting yourself, but an extended investigation calls for more than a short response: the ability to steer source selection, examine connected material, and organize findings. OpenAI documents Deep Research support for connected apps and data services where available, and the ability to focus research on specified sites. Availability depends on factors including plan, region, workspace settings, and app capabilities. These controls describe workflow options; they do not establish superior factual accuracy. See OpenAI’s Deep Research documentation.

ChatGPT Deep Research
Consider it when the question requires a multi-step investigation or when relevant information sits in supported connected services as well as on the web. If you need to constrain the investigation to particular sites, OpenAI documents site-focused research as an option. Confirm the feature is available to your account and that the services you need are supported.
Microsoft Researcher
Microsoft Support describes a workflow in which you ask a question, respond to optional clarification, and let Researcher analyze trusted sources, including work files and the web. The result is a structured report with key insights, citations, and next steps. This is useful when a report-shaped output matters, but the documentation describes a capability, not a guarantee that every source or conclusion is correct. See Microsoft’s Researcher guide.
When the question is about your workplace, not the public web
Microsoft 365 Copilot Search is aimed at finding information across Microsoft 365 emails, files, chats, meetings, and connected data sources, subject to the organization’s configuration and access permissions. It solves a different problem from public-web search: locating material a person is permitted to access within a work environment. Microsoft distinguishes this work search from Copilot Search on the public web. Read Microsoft’s Copilot Search documentation.
If your goal is to find a document or meeting detail, check whether your organization has enabled the relevant connected sources and whether you have permission to see them. For open-ended questions about public information, use a public-web search or research workflow instead.

How to use citations without treating them as proof
A citation is a route to evidence, not evidence that the answer is right. A 2026 audit examined ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity across 712 real-world, human-generated queries about politics, health, and the environment. The study reported evidence of AI-generated sources among cited sources; these accounted for approximately 16% of cited sources in its sample. That figure is bounded to the audit’s queries and methods, not a general error rate for all answers, services, or later versions. Read the 2026 audit.
- Open the cited page rather than relying on the answer’s description of it.
- Check the author or organization and the publication date.
- Confirm that the page is the source the answer claims it is.
- Find the exact sentence, figure, or evidence that supports the claim you plan to repeat.
- For an important or disputed question, consult primary sources and compare competing evidence.
A separate comparison likewise treats citations as useful navigation aids rather than automatic proof. A 2025 ACM FAccT paper found that participants hovered over and clicked citations more often in tested answer-engine conditions than in its traditional-search comparison. That measures interaction with citations, not successful verification or citation accuracy. Read the ACM FAccT paper.

What to check before committing to a tool
- Source control: Can you focus on chosen sites or use relevant connected data?
- Evidence visibility: Are citations easy to open and tied clearly to claims?
- Follow-up: Can you ask questions that build on the investigation or refine its scope?
- Search context: Do you need public pages, local listings, shopping results, or private work content?
- Availability: Does the feature work in your region, account, plan, and workspace?
- Privacy and advertising: Read current provider terms if data handling or ad-free access is decisive; do not assume these are uniform across products.
- Conventional results: Keep standard web search in the workflow when exact navigation or broad discovery matters.
